Marvelous Tiomkin score, released on CD by FSM. Great stuff! First third, about building the pyramid, is great. Then the subplot starts, with Ms. Collins as "Princess Nellifer of Cyprus," in some slinky 50's outfit, presenting herself as Pharaoh's "tribute." Then the whole plot devolves into her machinations to grab power and riches, along with having an affair with Pharaoh's Captain of the Guard, played by a luckless Sydney Chaplin, son of Charlie, whose film career was not so mysteriously shortened by his appearance in this turkey. (He went back to New York, where he ended up as the bland lead in several well-received hits, like BELLS ARE RINGING and FUNNY GIRL.) Finally, the film picks up, with Nellifer surrounded by mute priests, inside the pyramid. Can't believe this is the only screenwriting credit Faulkner ever had in films. Bet he drank a lot more than usual, just trying to get over it.... Tiomkin's score is the best thing in it, and the FSM 2-CD set restores a lot of music cut out of the film.

Nor does the publicity mention hunky, handsome Dewey Martin, who seemed to have been a Hawks protégée, having appeared in this, THE BIG SKY, and THE THING. All three films with good Tiomkin scores.
