So I went to Target first thing this morning and bought the Target Exclusive! It includes the 2D and 3D version of the film along with a bonus DVD and DVD copy of the film. The 3D version is only available at Target and Best Buy. The bonus DVD is only available at Target. I've already watched the 2D and 3D version and they look and sound great!
That's a great price for 5 discs! I picked this up at Target Tuesday as well, and look forward to watching it tomorrow. (Don't tell me how the movie ends... )
I found Rogue One completely uninvolving and quite boring to be honest.
I thought the characters were, without exception, dull and unlikable and as such there was zero jeopardy as I simply didn't care which ones lived and which died.
Then bit at the end with Vader on the rebel ships seemed totally tacked on and the CGI Leia looked awful (Tarkin wasn't too bad).
Given that I didn't really think much of TFA either, I've come to the conclusion that maybe I just don't have any love for Star Wars any more. I was hoping this movie would re-kindle some of the passion but if anything it probably had the reverse effect.
I bought the Blu-ray and watched the film for the first time this weekend. Enjoyed it very much. The last 45 minute block is a good payoff. I thought the re-creation of Peter Cushing was well executed. They're getting better at the mouth movements syncing with the dialogue. Remember Tron Legacy bringing back the young Jeff Bridges? The articulation of the mouth wasn't so convincing in that film (I still love that movie, though). I liked the cameos of some Episode IV characters as well. Nothing really memorable about Giacchino's score. No soundtrack for me.
I got the standard Blu-ray package on release day. I saw it twice in the theater before that. I think I enjoyed it more than any Star Wars movie I've seen since ROTJ, despite a couple of thing I think should have been done better. I was uncertain about Giacchino's score the first time I saw it, but it really has grown on me since. I also really enjoyed the performances of the original music during the end credits. The orchestration sounds more tonally bold to my ear (perhaps greater inclusion of lower registers in the orchestra?) than the performances in the other more recent Star Wars movies. This music is lacking from the CD release of the soundtrack. I think this one will get played fairly often.
I bought the Target Exclusive 3-D version. I don't know what's in the extras, but the transfer is everything it should be on the digital capture scale.
