The Oscar Best Picture screw-up will go down in history as perhaps the biggest award show SNAFU of all time. Emma Stone said that while Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were on stage, she was backstage clutching her Oscar AND the card that had her name on it as the Best Actress winner.

If Beatty is correct that the card in his envelope was for Emma Stone, that can only mean that there was a duplicate card. The ONE time they don't introduce the accountants at the Oscar ceremony and LOOK what happens.

Someone at PricewaterhouseCoopers is going to be out of a job Monday morning. And I'd be very surprised if that firm were the accountants for next year's Oscars.

I thought it was the best thing to happen at the Oscars ever! And Kimmel was as good as Hope and Carson ever were.

So what you're saying is that there were 2 separate Best Actress cards?

In addition to the Best Picture card?

As I recall, Beatty did open an envelope, look puzzled, then show it to Faye Dunaway, who announced LA LA LAND.

So then all the LLL people whoop and holler and come up on stage and make a number of thank You speeches.

Then the LLL producer announces there's been a mistake, and a dumbfounded Beatty explains that it's really MOONLIGHT, and they hold up the Best Picture card announcing MOONLIGHT.

Much consternation, especially with most of the audience standing.

But, what I wonder is whether Beatty somehow got hold of Emma Stone's envelope and card, thinking it was the Beat Picture announcement. I don't remember him breaking a seal, only opening an envelope.

Meaning Beatty made the mistake.

Latest info is that there are always two sets of envelopes and cards, in two briefcases, held by two accounting firm representatives--one on each side of the stage. They are to hand the appropriate envelope to the presenter(s) right before they walk out, from either side of the stage. Close-ups of the envelope in Beatty's hand appear to show that it says "Actress in a Leading Role" on it, which apparently he didn't notice.

It seems like someone handed Beatty the duplicate Best Actress envelope.

One of my Facebook buddies just pointed out to me the funniest line about the Oscars so far. We need Jack Nicholson to start slapping Faye Dunaway as she yells, "Moonlight (slap), La La Land (slap), Moonlight (slap), La La Land (slap)" until she finally screams, "It's Moonlight and La La Land!"

Hahaha, I like that. Well, the Chinatown 45th anniversary is just two or three years away. smile

from the Hollywood Reporter

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/oscars-we-sincerely-apologize-moonlight-la-la-land-accounting-firm-says-980846

After a stunning and surreal mistake that may be the worst Academy Awards telecast flub in history, the accounting firm in charge of the ballot-counting process is clarifying its role.

"We sincerely apologize to Moonlight, La La Land, Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for best picture," said PricewaterhouseCoopers, which has overseen the Academy's ballot-counting process for 83 years.

The statement added: "The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred. We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation."

PwC has had Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz as co-ballot leaders overseeing the process for several years. The company touted that the ballot briefcases had made stops in 11 cities across the U.S. before making its way to Hollywood for the big day.

I don't see how Beatty or Dunaway can be apportioned any blame. Beatty saw there was an error, looked dubious, and then showed the card to Dunaway who was oblivious at that moment in time there was a mistake. She obviously thought he was offering her the opportunity to read out the winner, which she did without taking on board all the information on the card. Perhaps, she should have looked at the entire thing before saying anything, however, in the heat of the moment she saw "La La Land" and assumed the obvious.

"The escalating violence, tragic loss of human life and threat of all-out war was overshadowed today by the announcement of the Oscar nominations."

I'd rather the problems in this world were unimportant paper mix-ups than triggers being pulled, however, that is not down to us. We're not following orders.

Protesters spotted later last night, carrying signs that read "Moonlight...Not My Best Picture".
