Do you think ROGUE ONE has a chance?

I'd say it's down to DOCTOR STRANGE or THE JUNGLE BOOK.

Jungle Book is the most impressive of the nominees.

Does it count as visual effects if it's essentially an animated film? Do animated films get nominated for best visual effects?

Who Framed Roger Rabbit won for both visual effects and a special Oscar for the animation so Jungle Book can certainly win.

With today's computers, the categories of animation and special effects are starting to overlap. I would say that the distinction is that CGI special effects lean more toward photo-realism while CGI animation is more fanciful. And special effects generally support real-life actors, while animation is more stand-alone. All that begins to break down with something like the 2016 THE JUNGLE BOOK which has nearly as much animation as the 1967 version.

I'm sorry it won. I thought it spent most of the movie in the uncanny valley. So weird when it feels like you're seeing something very different to what other people watching the same movie are seeing.

I generally agree with Mastage. Although I've not seen any of the films nominated, Jungle Book would seem to be a CGI animated movie with the single human element matted into the artificial scenery along with the other CGI character depictions.

Rogue One also features a huge CGI environment, except there are more human character elements matted into the artificial layered scenery. The distinction may be that Rogue One must feature scenes in which there is no CGI element, whereas Jungle Book has CGI in every scene. I think it's true the lines are somewhat blurred with this year's nominations, so I can agree with Bob, too.

So we're guaranteed many many more years of crappy CGI. Thank you Oscars!

I didn't watch it live.. only a bit of highlights, the only good moment was JK Rowling winning her 1st Oscar.

All the rest was lousy, I think Hollywood.. was choked that la la land didn't clean up, there was a lot expected 14, they got 6, it all went pear shaped, also it was far too political, what was burrito boy banging on about the wall, its the Oscars you idiot.

& finally Hollywood even had the cheek to blame, Mr T****. for there fiasco, bunch of idiots. Awful viewing, never again.
