The 5-part mini-series TEXAS RISING told the story of the creation of the Texas Rangers. Bill Paxton starred as Sam Houston, a leader of the Texas Revolution and the first and third President of the Republic of Texas. The Texas-born Paxton actually was a distant relative of Sam Houston. Said Paxton: "Sam Houston and I share common grandparents, going back six generations. His mother would be a great-aunt of mine. That makes Sam Houston and me second cousins four times removed."

Roland Joffé directed the 2015 series. The score by Bruce Broughton and John Debney was made available by MCA Nashville as a download.

The second and last feature film directed by Bill Paxton was 2005's THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED. Set at the 1913 U.S. Open golf tournament, the film told the true story of 20-year-old caddy Francis Ouimet (Shia LaBeouf) who was allowed to play against his idol, 1900 U.S. Open champion, Englishman Harry Vardon (Stephen Dillane). Bill Paxton did not act in the film, but his 11-year-old son James played the part of Young Harry Vardon. Brian Tyler's score was released by Hollywood Records.

Eight-year-old Bill Paxton was in the crowd when President John F. Kennedy emerged from the Hotel Texas on the morning of his assassination on November 22, 1963. Photographs of Paxton being lifted above the crowd are on display at the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas, Texas. So it was fitting that Paxton was one of the producers on the 2013 film PARKLAND, a recounting of the chaotic events that occurred at Dallas' Parkland Hospital on the day President Kennedy was assassinated.

The idea for the film began in a conversation between actor, director and producer Tom Hanks; producer Gary Goetzman; and Bill Paxton. Goetzman said: "We were at a baseball game and the Kennedy assassination came up. Bill is fascinated by all of the theories about it. He is from Fort Worth and remembers seeing Kennedy speak there on the day of the assassination." Sometime later, Paxton visited the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas, which is dedicated to the assassination and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. Watching a film loop of the president's visit to Texas, he was shocked to recognize himself in the background, perched on his father's shoulders. When he stopped in an airport bookstore later the same day and found a copy of Vincent Bugliosi's book, Four Days in November: The Assassination of John F. Kennedy (2008), he became determined to find a way to tell the familiar story from a particularly personal point of view."

Paxton shared the book with Hanks and Goetzman, who began to see it as a perfect project for Playtone, which had produced a number of award-winning mini-series for HBO based on pivotal moments in American history, including BAND OF BROTHERS (2001), JOHN ADAMS (2008), and THE PACIFIC (2010). Hanks, Goetzman, and Paxton bought the rights to the book, intending to produce it as a big-budget HBO miniseries. PARKLAND is a compromise of the project they had in mind.

The film was written and directed by Peter Landesman. James Newton Howard's score was made available by Rhino as a download.

On February 2nd, 2017, Bill Paxton began appearing in his second television series, ”Training Day” on CBS. The series is based upon the 2001 film of the same name, and takes place 15 years after the events in that film. The series “Training Day” follows Officer “Kyle Craig” (Justin Cornwell) as he infiltrates the LAPD's Special Investigation Section (SIS) by becoming a partner with the morally ambiguous “Detective Frank Roarke” (Bill Paxton), whose off-the-books activities have attracted the attention of the higher-ups.

While the series received generally negative reviews from critics, they were kinder to Paxton. David Hinckley of The Huffington Post said that “Smoothing off some of the rogue cop’s edges, ironically, makes Paxton’s acting job more difficult. He has to keep reminding us that he’s contemptuous of many law enforcement standards while at the same time throwing out hints he still harbors some deep and real humanity.” And The Lincoln Journal Star’s Jeff Korbelik wrote that “Paxton steals just about every scene he’s in.”

After Paxton’s death, CBS stated that all 13 commissioned episodes had already been filmed, as shooting had already wrapped up in December 2016. TMZ reports that if there is to be a second season of the show, there won't be a recasting of another actor to play “Frank.”

Bill Paxton family settles lawsuit with hospital over death

The lawsuit, filed a year later, alleged that the surgeon, Dr. Ali Khoynezhad, used a “high risk and unconventional surgical approach” that was unnecessary and that he lacked the experience to perform, and that he downplayed the procedure’s risks.

The misguided treatment caused Paxton to suffer excessive bleeding, cardiogenic shock and a compromised coronary artery, the suit alleged, and said that Cedars-Sinai knew that Khoynezhad, tended to “engage in maverick surgeries and show suboptimal judgment.”

I'd like to think that the surgeon is never allowed anywhere near a hospital ever again.
What a POS.
