Williams has a couple of new compilations coming out, to celebrate his 85th. One of them is the Spielberg/Williams one. But it occured to me that it would have been cool to have a compilation of Spielberg scores NOT composed by Williams.

What would that include, exactly? Well, how about this for a playlist:

THE FEATURE FILMS

BRIDGE OF SPIES (2015) - Thomas Newman
THE COLOR PURPLE (1985) - Quincy Jones
TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE - "Kick the Can" (1983) - Jerry Goldsmith
POLTERGEIST (1982) - Jerry Goldsmith (yes, I consider this a Spielberg film just as much as I consider THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS a Burton film, not a Henry Selick film)

THE BILLY GOLDENBERG YEARS

DUEL (1971) - Billy Goldenberg
COLUMBO - "Murder by the Book" (1971) - Billy Goldenberg
THE NAME OF THE GAME - "LA 2017" (1971) - Billy Goldenberg
NIGHT GALLERY - "Eyes" (1969) -- Billy Goldenberg

OTHER EARLY TV WORK

SAVAGE (1973) - Gil Melle
SOMETHING EVIL (1972) - Wladimir Selinsky
OWEN MARSHALL, COUNSELOR AT LAW - "Eulogy for a Wide Receiver" (1971) - Elmer Bernstein(?)
THE PSYCHIATRIST - "Par for the Course" (1971) - Gil Melle??
THE PSYCHIATRIST - "The Private World of Martin Dalton" (1971) - Gil Melle??
NIGHT GALLERY - "Make Me Laugh" (1971) - Robert Prince
MARCUS WELBY M.D. - "The Daredevil Gesture" (1970) - Leonard Rosenman

BONUS:

AMBLIN' (1968) - Michael Lloyd

What do you think are the chances of seeing anything like this at some point?

The Color Purple, Twilight Zone and Poltergeist are represented in a Eric Kunzel compilations cd titled:
Salute To The Great Movie Scores (Films Of Steven Spielberg)It also features prominent Williams selections as well.

I think the chances of anyone deciding to release a compilation of music from Spielberg films not dominated by Williams are fairly remote to say the least.

Great idea, though - I can see the blurb now:

"To mark the 85th birthday of Maestro John Williams, here's a compilation without any of his music on it"

Ha, ha...good point. Perhaps better to release it in conjunction with a Spielberg jubilée instead. Disregarding the commercial potential (or lack thereof) of such a project, I'm guessing it's a nightmare to find the material and rights for all those early TV things.

And of course you left out the animated films. An American Tail, Land Before Time, Fievel Goes West, etc. Their just as legitimate if your going to include Poltergeist.

I'd argue with that, since POLTERGEIST bears Spielberg's mark all over it (themes and mise-en-scene) -- to a far greater extent than anything else he's produced. But POLTERGEIST is an endless debate. I've just decided to land on the side of Spielberg, regardles of what the man himself says.

With the list you gave, I'd say pretty unlikely.

I think we'd be more likely to see a release if it also included Spielberg-produced works/Amblin stuff, like Gremlins, Goonies, Back to the Future, etc etc.

That would certainly be at the expense of TV works, though.

I think that point of view can be reasonably taken.
