...i.e. albums with only a snippet of score, or maybe no score at all.

I always liked Fright Night (1985)
The songs are ok to good and most of them are well integrated in the narrative. The fact that one important and long sequence occurs in a disco also helps making the music noted.
I'd prefer the film/instrumental version of Come To Me, but its good even with Brad Fiedel singing the lirics.

Rocky IV was not a bad song album also.

Still secretly love all the songs on Tuff Turf.

And, apart from the title track, I played the song side of The Terminator album much more than I ever played the score.

As far as songs and not the score, my favorite is Over The Top. Sammy Hagar, Kenny Logins, Robin Zander are just the few.

Does "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" count? Or does that have too much score on it, and was it released too late?

If not, I also always liked the albums for "The Breakfast Club" and "Stand By Me" (even though the music from that one is actually from the 50s and 60s.)

Always loved Top Gun

I'm including the original Back to the Future release as it was pretty song heavy..and I loved it because it was all I had

......and like Henry, a very big soft spot for Karate Kid II

Still secretly love all the songs on Tuff Turf.

Some great songs written/produced by Jonathan Elias there. I need to buy that LP, as it's not on CD.

A shame that the score by Elias is still unreleased though.

I was a late bloomer when it came to pop and rock. I loved all the song related soundtracks of the 80's.
Flash Dance, Top Gun, Fame, Dirty Dancing, etc.

Lots of favorites mentioned here but one that's not, and one that never got an official release as far as I know, is REAL GENIUS.

Also a huge fan of TEEN WOLF.

Knowing full well the nightmare that must be involved in untangling the rights issues, my fervent hope is that the success of FERRIS BUELLER makes a few deluxe score/songtrack releases and rereleases like these possible some day soon. Thomas Newman's back catalog would benefit greatly, not only with higher profile stuff like THE LOST BOYS but other, less polished gems like GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN.

Yes, the Newman stuff is very much welcomed! Real Genius is a great score.

'Electric Dreams'- every track a winner.

There are 2 or 3 songs in 'Flashdance' that I like, but I could never bring myself to buy the album.

Four come to mind that still stand up to repeat plays.

1. Metropolis. Freddie Mercury with Love Kills and Bonnie Tyler with Here She Comes. Giorgio Moroder has one track.

2. Streets of Fire. Jim Steinman wrote two songs that are killer....Tonight is What it Means to be Young and Nowhere Fast. Marilyn Martin sings Sorcerer written by Stevie Nicks.

3. Eddie & The Cruisers. John Cafferty did the entire song soundtrack, and had a hit with On The Dark Side.

4. Fame. Michael Gore & Dean Pitchford wrote a stellar lineup of songs, winning the Oscar for the title song. But I like I Sing the Body Electric as the finale.

The 1st one is woefully inadequate in representing all the songs.
I keep hoping a proper collection will come out.
But it probably never will because of the usual problems.

Plus the aformentioned "Fame" and "Metropolis".

One of my favorites is 1982's "Party Party" songtrack album:

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Party-Party-Original-Motion-Picture-Soundtrack/release/1580353

Did not see the film at the time, but this disc is packed with goodies from many of my favorite "new wave" artists of the day -- Elvis Costello, Bananarama, Madness, Bad Manners -- and most of the tracks were unique to this album. Many of the songs are covers of older tunes -- Altered Images covers Del Shannon's "Little Town Flirt," the Selecter's Pauline Black covers Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry." Bananarama's cover of the Sex Pistols' "No Feelings" is wonderfully silly, and the instrumental break in Modern Romance's "Band Of Gold" made me laugh out loud as it strains (but doesn't quite make it) to break into "Also Sprach Zarathustra."

The film has a ton of music in it in addition to the songs on the soundtrack, but I'm not sure it even has any "underscore" music -- it may all be "source music" new wave songs played at the party -- ?
