I think Robin Curtis captured being a Vulcan better than Kirstie, in tone and delivery. Although at the time of Star Trek II, I thought Kirstie was pretty hot looking. For me, ultimately Robin did better and was more believable in the role. I had heard that Saavik was a Vulcan/Romulan mix and Curtis portrayed this well as Alley seemed more part Vulcan and Human mix with more on the human side.
I prefer Kirstie Alley. I think the scene that mentions she's half Romulan should've been left in to explain her using expletives and crying. Anyway don't get me wrong, both ladies are quite lovely, but Alley wins for me.
Robin Curtis did the best that she could, but she was ultimately impaired by a script that gave her very little to work with, and she was taking over the role of the woman who made it memorable.
Valeris reminded me of one of those Christmas Tree Elves you had as a kid that you'd hang on your tree and they had their knees bent and their arms around their knees like were doing a canon ball into a swimming pool.

What do you think?
The pic clearly shows Robin Curtis facial features doesn't translate well into a Vulcan. (half Vulcan/Romulan) She looks like a parody of a Vulcan. Like a character from Galaxy Quest. It would be like making Woody Allen a Klingon.
Maybe it's the 2 hairstyles that sabotage the look they were trying to achieve. But I like them--the later infatuation with the bowl cut on women is off-putting to me. Giving Alley the Vulcan eyebrows might have helped. That they didn't do that is puzzling.
I thought Robin Curtis was a dreadful actor. Some of her dialogue delivery in Trek III is excruciatingly badly delivered.
She may have faired a little better if she had been directed properly but sadly I feel Nimoy hasn't really got a clue what he was doing behind he camera.
Kirsty Alley came accross to me as Kirsty Alley playing a Vulcan in an actual Star Trek film, and being very surprised about it, so much that she still had to come to terms to it when the cameras started rolling. Robin Curtis on the other hand was far more agile and in control. Where Alley behaved like a novice overtaken by the situation, Curtis, although somewhat a trainee, was able to guide Spock and herself through the situation of finding out the Grissom is destroyed them having to stay on an unstable planet and a Klingon attack imminent. She also looked like a Vulcan. Vulcans usually are portrayed with brown eyes. Besides that she looked like she was a ST TAS female Vulcan come to life.
But Alley WAS a novice (as was Saavik). She had done practically no acting prior to ST2. Whatever she portrayed onscreen was pretty much how Nick Meyer laid it out.

Always confused about that. Thank you for ending the confusion. Same thing happened when Scotty lost it over the young crewman. Of course, no one knew the latter was his nephew until scenes were restored later.
