Hi everybody!

I am getting a person into film music as she is the kind of person which almost only notices scores made by Michael Nyman or Yann Tiersen instead of regular film scores.

So I playing her a few examples on bluray so she can notice how important music is, I was thinking of "Psycho", "Vertigo", "Jaws", maybe "Lawrence of Arabia", "The Grand Hotel Budapest" (themes and mickeymousing) and maybe some more I can't remember now.

So, if you were to introduce someone to film music, what examples would you show her? Any help is grateful smile

I would first chart where his interests lie, and not just pick film scores that you personally love, or even that are considered classics in the 'film score canon'.

For example, if he likes Nyman and Tiersen, it's fair to assume that he has a leaning towards minimalist composers. So Philipp Glass, Clint Mansell, Abel Korzeniowski, Dario Marianelli etc. could be an appropriate gateway. Or some of the stuff that Danny Elfman has done in recent years (like STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE or THE UNKNOWN KNOWN).

Good luck with that endeavour, Juanki. Go easy. I've found that people in general hate to be told what to like (I know that's not exactly your case). I think perhaps that if you're watching films together, you should do it following her likes (of film and score), but without saying "Now we're going to watch PSYCHO because Bernard Herrmann's entirely string-orchestra score is brilliant".

I was exaggerating a little for effect there. I don't imagine that's what your plan is. Let us know how you get on.

By "regular film scores" do you mean ones that she's no doubt heard but not been interested in enough to investigate them herself? Does she WANT to be, um, enlightened? Take her out for a drink or some dinner instead, would be my advice smile .

Black Emanuelle's Groove - Nico Fidenco
Coffee - Roy Ayers
Five Dolls for an August Moon - Piero Umiliani
Camille 200 - Piero Piccioni
Vampyros Lesbos - Hubler & Schwab

Just for starters.

Show her the final fight scene in The Challenge with the sound turned off, then again with the CD cue of goldsmith's score lined up (right after the villain says "As you wish"). That's a pretty good concept demo.

I think it's best to find out what her favorite films are. Watch those with her and talk about how the music was used in the film by the composer.

A lot of us love scores and got into film music because we have just watched our favorite films over and over again. Maybe there will be some favorites your not familiar with and you might find something new for you too.

I do think Cliff Martinez's Solaris is a good choice if I can suggest one.

And film scores by Michael Nyman or Yann Tiersen are not regular film scores??

I think I'd be talking to her about/introducing here to WHATEVER IT TAKES to keep her interested, even if it's not film music - since getting a woman to talk to a nerd is soooooo incredibly rare. big grin

Seriously, I'd do what the others say about following HER interests first, then finding films that match that.

Yeah, what DavidinBerkely said. Put her first.

Or, better yet, hook up with a woman who already has soundtracks by Kenyon Hopkins, Les Baxter, and Lalo Schifrin.

Yeah, you can discuss film music over dinner while drinking wine from the actual holy grail and being waited upon by a leprechaun.

When my wife and I got together, she had Gone with the Wave, Lonelyville, and Hell's Belles. Among a bunch of others.

Tie them up and force them (at gun point if necessary) to listen to all STAR WARS scores repeatedly until the person can identify correctly at least 12 different leitmotifs. Then you're set, you can let them go. They'll love film music from then on. Piece o' cake.
