I’ve always loved the song HEART AND SOUL. It was the first song I learned to play on the piano. What I didn’t realize is how many times it has been sung by various artists. I had a modern rock station on yesterday and heard the song PLAY THAT SONG by TRAIN, and I loved it!

Here is a brief history.

Hoagy Carmichael wrote the song HEART AND SOUL in 1938. Here is that original song from 1938.

The Cleftones released it in 1961, and it was used in the movie AMERICAN GRAFFITI.

I really liked Howard Shore’s film score for BIG, and he used HEART AND SOUL in the end credits and incorporated some of his film’s themes into it. This is my favorite rendition of H&S, especially starting at 1:20. (See, this IS related to film scores, so it is on this side of the board.)

Now we have a new version. The article below indicates the song’s borrowing from Heart & Soul. I don’t know if this will cause a law suit or not as I don’t know the background.

PLAY THAT SONG by Train in 2017

I know there are hundreds of other renditions. I think it is just AMAZING that a song composed in 1938 is still be used or recorded today and is sometimes used in movies. It is a song for all ages, and I wanted to share this with FSM members.

Chime in if any of you know more about this song.

The song figured prominently in SUPERMAN RETURNS. I think that's the last major time I heard it in the popular culture.

I also enjoy this updated version a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YecZkgfXZzg

Zap, I didn't remember this song from Superman Returns, but I found it on youtube.

Here is the famous scene from BIG that uses the song.

That song by T'Pau that you posted is a really neat song, but I thought it was a new original song, not the one Carmichael composed, but I could be wrong. I just didn't recognize any parts of it like I did with the Train version. Am I deaf? Could be.

My favorite T'Pau song has the same title and nothing else whatsoever in common with the Carmichael number. So I'd say your hearing is intact. smile

Another movie that used your song briefly but amusingly was The Competition (1980)

This film introduced me to Sergei Prokofiev, long before Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan put his name in circulation. Piano Concerto No. 3 is amazing. I never became a Prokofiev expert, but it's nice to be introduced to things like that.

I remember the movie THE COMPETITION with Richard Dreyfuss. They did play Heart and Soul as kind of a whimsical joke. It was the very opposite of the classical pieces they had to play. Good call, and I'm glad I'm not deaf.

Zap, I didn't remember this song from Superman Returns, but I found it on youtube.

It was the song that Lois's son and Lex's thug played on the piano on the yacht.

I noticed two things that I enjoyed in the video by TRAIN called Play That Song. First of all, the lead singer at one point stands on a large keyboard that is on the ground. I think it is a homage or reference to Tom Hanks in BIG.

Secondly, I like the fact that not all of the extras, both men and women, who dance, skate or walk along have perfect bodies. Some are overweight like many people are. It is nice not to see "model-like" perfection in every visual.

Jeff, here is that scene from Superman Returns.

I'm most familiar with the version by The Cleftones you mentioned Joan, having listened to the soundtrack to "American Graffiti" so many times.

Jenk, I love the movie American Graffiti and its film score. The movie and music was a big reminder of a certain era for teenagers.

I believe the 50's and the 60's had several versions of Heart & Soul.

And this topic is dying now which is okay. In 10 years we might see another version of this song. (Just hoping no one will "rap" the whole thing sans melody.)

Oh dear! I pray your hopes come true about there NOT being a rap version Joan. frown

Okay, I'm sure there are hundreds of songs from The Great American Songbook which I don't know ...

... but when I read the thread title I was convinced you meant that wonderful melody Body and Soul.

But no, this song you promote is one I can say I have no recollection of hearing and yet, from clips I've just played by Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald and an unknown female singer, it is a song I should know ... and should have in my collection. I have hundreds of songs by each of those two named artists but, admittedly, my dozens of works by the wonderful Hoagy Carmichael amount to only 15 distinct titles.

Thanks, Joan, for raising this song's profile ... it's one I shall look out for now that I know of its existence.

And, yes, let's hope such songs remain with us ... unadulterated!

Mitch
