Happy 15th Anniversary DigitMovies/DigitSoundTracks!

Midnight Blue - Stelvio Cipriani (DGST023)

"We are pleased to release for the absolute first time on CD, the OST by Stelvio Cipriani for the drama film “Midnight Blue” (aka “La Domenica Del Diavolo”). Stelvio Cipriani composed an uplifting score (the film takes place on a Sunday in summer) with a recurring dance-flavored theme with the fantastic voice of Edda Dell'Orso. The score describes the freshness and light-heartedness of three very young friends during a relaxing day at the beach. Unfortunately destiny has something in store for them. They meet three seemingly mild mannered men who are actually criminals who’ve escaped from prison. For them Cipriani creates hard and rhythmic sounds performed by a  moog synthesizer to create anticipation during pursuits to the death. For our CD we’ve used all the music recorded in stereo, well-preserved to this day on the original master tapes."

Totò diabolicus - Totò contro i 4 - Totò contro Maciste - Piero Piccioni, Gianni Ferrio, Francesco De Masi (DGST027)

"As a tribute to the great Totò, the king of laughter, we are releasing three complete soundtracks on CD from the films "Toto Diabolico" (aka "Toto Diabolicus") with music by Piero Piccioni, "Toto Vs. the 4" (aka "Toto Contro I 4") with music by Gianni Ferrio, and" Toto vs. Maciste "(aka" Toto contro Maciste") with music by Francesco De Masi. Piero Piccioni (December 6, 1921, Turin -July 23, 2004, Rome) was one of the greatest composers of film music. His name is associated with directors such as Francesco Rosi, Luchino Visconti, Alberto Sordi, and Vittorio De Sica. Only six songs were released from this OST in 1997 on the box set C.A.M. "Toto, The Prince of Satirical Comedy" (CVS 900-011), but for our CD we used every note recorded and preserved on the mono master tapes from the original recording session. For this score, the author composed a grotesque tango for the main theme alternating with suspenseful music and nightclub lounge themes."

Digitmovies Alternative Solo Version - Riccardo Rocchi - Andrea Milan (SPDM013)

"During our ongoing research in the recovery of Italian soundtracks, we often realize that we cannot please every fan nor can we satisfy ourselves. We have been the first collectors and the first critics of our work for many years. The work that we carry out is not just about recovering and restoring old soundtracks, but is about discovery and experimenting with new things.
For this reason we wanted to write a chronicle of our musical history, and in the overview of our productions we have decided to include a production much different from our usual modus operandi. We have remained true to our theme but experimented too, carrying out this project with simple yet different sounds from everything that we usually offer. We’ve also had the fortune of meeting two excellent performers and professionals to help us. To illustrate this journey we have chosen some themes that have represented and represent the turning points on the path taken by our label.  In our opinion we’ve created a product that represents part of our history and is not just simply a compilation dedicated to our work. This project is a thank you to all the people who, over the course of nearly 15 years of passionate work, have worked with us, met with us, supported us, thanked us, helped us, disputed us, and have made us grow and hopefully improve. Thanks to all of you who give us the opportunity to be able to continue our crusade in favor of ALL the music from Italian film.  And thanks to all of you who wait each day for our new creation."

Totò diabolicus - Totò contro i 4 - Totò contro Maciste - Piero Piccioni, Gianni Ferrio, Francesco De Masi (DGST027)

Here's a little outline to help us digest this album's programme:

  • The 1961 Totò contro Maciste is represented via only 6 cues written by De Masi - most likely this flick contains music 'tracked' from other sources.
Unclear whether these recording sessions are stereo or mono.

  • Piccioni's Totò diabolicus is from 1962 and is in mono (15 tracks)

  • Ferrio's Totò contro i 4 is from 1963 and is also in mono (14 tracks)

Since the Piccioni and the Ferrio constitute the majority of this album's duration, then this is basically a monaural soundtrack release (correct?)
I wonder why Digitmovies indicates on the front cover that this is in full stereo when the only possible stereo tracks could come from those 6 De Masi cues?
As Totò contro Maciste is the earliest one of these three, I doubt very much it's in stereo...

... nevertheless, I'm grateful that recordings from the early 1960s continue to made available commercially.

I have the CAM Toto compilation, which means I have ~16 of those tracks already. Nevertheless, I will certainly be getting the Digitmovies CD as I can't pass any Piccioni. I could check if they are stereo or mono if you insist, but for me it doesn't make a huge difference.

True, it doesn't make a difference to me, either, as I love mono soundtracks as well and will no doubt be getting this.
Just curious as to how such a blunder could arrive on the front cover after months upon months of pre-production & post-production.

Digitmovies have apologized for the mistake on their Facebook website:

"Dear friend collectors around the world, due a graphic mistake on the front sleeve of our CD dedicated to TOTO’ you read “In full stereo”, but really the “TOTO’ DIABOLICUS” score by Piero Piccioni is recorded in mono as well the two others scores from “TOTO’ CONTRO I 4” by Gianni Ferrio and “TOTO’ CONTRO MACISTE” by Francesco De Masi, as properly written in the liner notes.
    We apologize for the incident."
