I need to vent.

I've been using Amazon for music and film purchasing for YEARS, but now I've given up. Mostly due to insane shipping costs. So many fine deals to be found in the 'used' sections, but when I check out, a whopping 15 DOLLARS are put on top as shipping -- far higher than what is advertised, and regardless if it's sent from the US or from Europe. Sometimes, this is twice and even THREE times the amount of the actual CD. What the hell is this all about?! I know shipping costs are high these days, but not THAT high.

Plus, I can no longer hotlink to their cover images.

What ìs everyone's else take on the Amazon policies? Perhaps it's better for you Americans?

I do not have these issues.

I just got John Powell's Pan Sony pressed score CD for $9.99 and free shipping.
Fantastic CD too.

Yeah, I don't buy anything from the US Amazon Marketplace. Shipping's just stupid, always has been.

I use Amazon Prime in Europe/Germany and I pay no postage for anything. (Of course, it'd be different if I ordered from the US.)

I've thought about that, but they seem to upscale the price on the item itself; plus the exchange rate is poorer for Euro/Pounds than it is Dollars. AND it doesn't help that Norway is not part of the EU, so we fall in the 'rest of the world' category, even if the item is located just across the pond.

I was such an avid user of US Amazon (their selections and prices), back when the shipping costs -- both for new and used items -- were manageable.

Thor if you're browsing Amazon.COM's Marketplace outside of the USA you're basically just doing this:
It's a pure tease - flat rate international shipping is $15 per CD - per seller. So unless it's an item you can't find anywhere, and are willing to pay the premium price - it's best to stick with Amazon for your local region. I use Amazon.ca's marketplace often and find occasional deal - but because it's Canada - shipping per each CD is $3.49 each - I just basically add it to the price.

True, but $15!?? Where do they take this price from? Is the extra $7-8 a fee that Amazon US takes?

Amazon Germany is almost equally crazy -- 12 Euros!

I think that's the going rate now for tracked items via International airmail - they group CDs/DVDs into the same group and calculate a base rate. Books also get an overall flat rate. I hate it too, hence feeling like that Rabbit - we're just kids peering into a candy store salivating at all the options.

Most other online vendors I've seen charge $6-7, max, for an international item. But sadly, they have inflated prices on the item itself. As you say, the 'carrot' is the lowered prices in the marketplace sections.

I don't often buy CDs and movies online anymore, but when I do, this current situation slaps me in the face!

For me now patience with CDs has become a virtue - been buying a lot of stuff second hand off FSM'ers in the Trading Post. Who always are reasonable shippers.

That is the cost of shipping a CD from the US to Europe.

The lowest price I've seen is about $12.83, so when you add handling, that's about right

Such is life in the 21st Century.

I have a total ban on Amazon. Shipping rates ruin good deals. Not going to be forced into becoming a paying member for free shipping. I was a loyal customer for 15 years. They can go "F**k" themselves.

Thor, have you tried ordering from Amazon UK?

SAE have a Marketplace store there with a lot of older titles. I've just done a dummy order for one CD to Norway and postage was £3.58.

More and more, I prefer vendors who offer FREE shipping, even if that means they'll charge a bit more for the item. Alas, there aren't many who offer free shipping worldwide.

I use Amazon once in a while. It is E-bay I have used the most where shipping varies for me. But they have a search option “Price + shipping lowest first” which automatically does the calculations for me. Saves time. Also I have made some of my rarest finds on there. Sometimes sellers do not know how to describe their product or make a typo and I make out like a bandit. I just bought Ken Darby’s book HOLLYWOOD HOLYLAND: THE FILMING AND SCORING OF THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD for $24 on E-bay. Try finding that for less than $50 on Amazon.

Yeah, I know. For Denmark -- our neighbouring country -- it's 1.80. Just because they're in the EU and we're not.

I really don't know what I'm frustrated at here -- international postage rates, US vendors like Amazon, expensive CDs, the EU. I guess it's a combination of all. smile
