One of the greatest regrets this world should have is that the stovepipe hat and horizontal-striped shirts seen in Gangs of New York never became a clothing trend to the youth of 2002 (R.I.P.). In fact, damn the world all to Hell--especially FSMers, who are known for their fashion savvy, for not embracing this thiggish yet stylish wardrobe style

I exclude Zardoz from this category--the film, not the guy who posts here--because many FSMers still dress like this today (visit the Intrada or Varese offices and you'll see). wink

How an FSM meet up group photo *should* look

Yes a great shame that nobody has ever dressed as a star wars character! wink

You mean: a great shame that YOU never dressed as a Star Wars character. Everyone else here types their posts while wearing Stormtrooper armor. big grin

It should be said that sci-fi and fantasy/super-hero stuff is already well represented, so let the emphasis for this thread be on films not of those aforementioned genres. smile After all, we're all nerds here. smile

I think some of our senators should dress like the orangutans in Planet of the Apes. If the president did, though, he might actually become more popular!

One of the ones that tried, thanks to a huge marketing push, was the Cleopatra Look from the eternal cinematic epic...you guessed it, Cleopatra. I wonder how many Baby Boomers' "June Cleavers" wore a getup like this one when running down to the supermarket.

rory, you are like those comedians who can tell a joke whatever subject you chuck at them - except you can make any subject lead to a political comment/aside/gag. Weve seen it before on here - it leads to one outcome mate. And then we would miss your cheerful happy nature across the forum!! I dont wanna be the only miserable git here! smile

Well, in NY there's an Irish pub/restaurant known as the 'Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog' shop, and yours truly was one of a team who designed the collectible menus that won awards. And that pub is currently themed on the 'gangs' era, celebrating a chap called Pease who cleaned up the area with philanthropy at the time, a Methodist cleric.

Just another shameless plug from a hack who did once own two pairs of chequered trews.

Those long "duster" coats that they wore in Once Upon A Time In The West, I looked high & low for something like that after I'd seen it at the cinema, but nothing doing.

We even had a Western store in manor park east London that sold everything western and indian including air rifle winchesters!!

McCrum, I enjoy your shameless plugs AND your always-informative, yet never-condescending lectures. wink

That's Rory with a capital R, sir! I am what I am, and one thing I am is not interested in flame wars, which seems to be an obsession here, but I believe in freedom of expression, so whatever. One thing I am not is a miserable git (I'll let you in on a secret.... it's all a joke. I take little very seriously.)

So, I don't care for most of what passes for entertainment in our culture (US and UK) and have my own standards of what's good -- That makes me miserable? Only miserable there isn't more stuff that I think is good and worthwhile, that's all, and that's not really miserable.

The Great Gatsby (2013)

The schlumpy Millennial generation's artificially-boosted sense of self esteem would have been boosted even more had they dressed like the tragic Jay Gatsby, Old Sport.

As for the 1920s styles, those would require a modicum of slimness; and, given the rampant obesity of most FSMers, I also wouldn't expect the typically overweight film score nerd to redirect their already-allocated funds from obsolete CDs to fine threads (and threads) such as these.

I still have a couple of ponchos, one of them my brother-in-law bought back from Peru, I think it's real Yak hair (or something like that), I don't wear 'em outside, indoors with the curtains drawn.

I'm 5'9" and 165 pounds, so I could wear it and look good.

This may kill me and cause me to lose Tall Guy's friendship, but Bill, I'm going to pay you a compliment. You are NOT a "miserable git." You are usually funny, and I find that you like lots of movies and TV shows. (Yeah, you can be a bit "pervy" at times. Also, sometimes you don't speak "Yank English" so I need an interpretation, but no one is perfect.) I don't see you layering negative vibes all over FSM threads. There! That is the last compliment you ever get from me you Bloody B.W.

Joan, did you consider adopting the "Cleopatra Look"? You would have been a mere child at the time, but we know how impressionable children can be...wink

Jim, being a Baby Boomer, I loved the Cleopatra look. I enjoyed slathering on bright blue eye shadow topped off with thick black eyeliner. What I didn't like were teens and women ratting their hair into giant beehives and then using enough hairspray on the hives to make their hair as solid as dried concrete. Eewww. I think spiders and other critters nested in those hives.
