Welcome to the Oscar awards 2017, it is a cure for insomnia, a virtual guaranteed sweep for La La Land, which is a good film, but not the Great Film that it being reviewed as. And yes, I did see it. The best picture of the year is Hell or High Water, which is nominated, but it will not win. Hollywood loves itself, and La La Land is about Hollywood, so you can be rest assured, there is little suspense about where the big awards are going this year. I would love to be wrong. But I am going to be right.

"My" film for 2016 is Silence, but, aside from a Cinematography nomination, it was shut out - which I find odd, but go figure the logic of Oscars! Of the nine Best Picture nominees, La La Land is the only one likely to be in my top 5 for '16. I've also seen and modestly like Manchester by the Sea and Hell or High Water. I still need to see the other 6, with Lion the one I'm most intrigued with. Fences looks good too. I'm otherwise not very interested in the Oscars. I will not bother to watch the ceremony and will simply check online on who won and then promptly forget the whole thing!

Mark Very much with you, Silence is a superb film, almost entirely skipped over by the awards, which is more a commentary on the dubious nature of awards than the film itself. Yes, I have no intention of watching the Oscars.

I record the Oscars, then watch highlights the next day. The whole evening has become interminable, let alone having to deal with all the commercials.

Yes, I have no intention of watching the Oscars. I think Silence will join that prestigious list of classic films that failed to get a Best Picture Oscar nomination: 2001: A Space Odyssey, The African Queen, Psycho, The Third Man, Black Narcissus. A Night at the Opera, Modern Times, Fantasia, Sullivan's Travels, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Singin' in the Rain, The Night of the Hunter, East of Eden, The Searchers, Sweet Smell of Success, Vertigo, Some Like It Hot, The Innocents, The Manchurian Candidate, Hud, The Great Escape, Blow-Up, Women in Love, The Wild Bunch, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Days of Heaven, Gallipoli, Diner, Brazil, Blue Velvet, Barton Fink, Do the Right Thing, Breaking the Waves, The Ice Storm, Magnolia, Almost Famous, Mulholland Dr., The Master, etc., etc. (and this is not even considering potential eligible foreign language films.)

I would love to see a FLOOR TRAP DOOR installed and activated the instant a winner starts making a political statement that has nothing to do with their winning, during their speech. 3 hours of vanishing statuette recipients would be a treat. well, at least we will be spared the ridiculous whining about "lack of diversity" this year (but, you never know).

Chevy Chase actually did that gag when he hosted one year in the 1980s!

I would not. In fact, I hope as many of the recipients as possible speak up this year. Looking into my crystal ball: I see many FSm threads about the OScars locked by David Sones, administrator LOL!

So let it be written, so let it be done. And I voted for neither of the two top contenders, La La Land and whatever Santaoalala was up for this year. To me the Oscars have become a ridiculous bore. Anything that had any value died with Goldsmith, Bernstein and Horner. For those who like it though, Enjoy the Show! I have not watched it since 1977 - ANNIE HALL over STAR WARS??? gimme a breaK!

Well, somehow I think that's unlikely: Syrian Oscar-nominated film maker banned from US http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/39089364
