MONDAY, JANUARY 23

TERMINATOR---James Cameron will regain the rights to the franchise in 2019. He is in talks with director Tim Miller (DEADPOOL) for a final movie in the franchise which will reportedly be about the battle between mankind and Skynet.

HAN SOLO---Woody Harrelson confirmed in an interview that he will play Garris Shrike, young Han Solo's mentor, in the spinoff movie. Shrike appeared in the Star Wars book THE PARADISE SNARE.
However, Lucasfilm's Pablo Hidalgo post hinted that Harrelson is incorrect, "It's Darth Vegas all over again. These guys don't know these names."

CURRENT WAR---photo released of Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison in the movie about the electricity war between Edison and George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon).

STAR TREK: AXANAR---CBS and Paramount Pictures settled their lawsuit against the Alec Peters STAR TREK: AXANAR fan-funded movie. The settlement allows AXANAR to continue but with changes, “Axanar and Mr. Peters have agreed to make substantial changes to Axanar to resolve this litigation, and have also assured the copyright holders that any future Star Trek fan films produced by Axanar or Mr. Peters will be in accordance with the ‘Guidelines for Fan Films’ distributed by CBS and Paramount in June 2016.”

SPLIT---M. Night Shyamalan commented on a possible sequel combining SPLIT and his 2000 superhero movie, UNBREAKABLE, which starred Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, "This is down the line, but my hope is to make one final movie that combines the two."

THE HERO---Sam Elliott stars in this movie about an over-the-hill Western star who seeks to reconcile with his estranged family. Eliott's wife, Katharine Ross, Laura Prepon and Krysten Ritter also star.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS---a source said the shortlist of candidates to play Hal Jordan in the Warner Bros./DC Comics movie includes Tom Cruise, Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper, Joel McHale, Armie Hammer and Jake Gyllenhaal. Another source said James Marsden (WESTWORLD) is also on the list.
Hammer commented on the report, "I saw the reporting too. That's the first I've heard of it."

GAME OF THRONES---Freddie Stroma won't be returning as Dickon Tarly because he's starring as HG Wells in the ABC remake of TIME AFTER TIME, “I was shooting [TIME AFTER TIME], so my character, I wouldn’t be able to go back now. It was still fun. I got to be in that world. I’ve watched all of it. It’s just an incredible TV show.” He will be replaced by Tom Hopper (BLACK SAILS).

HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD---JK Rowling denied rumors that Warner Bros. is developing a movie trilogy based on the play," I know a lot of people are looking for reasons to be cheerful today, but there is NO TRUTH to the rumour about a #CursedChild movie trilogy!"

BUSHWICK---Brittany Snow and Dave Bautista star in this movie set in an alternate universe in which a graduate student and an ex-Marine team up when Brooklyn is invaded by a mysterious army.

WITCHBLADE---NBC series underway based on the comic book. The TNT tv series starring Yancy Butler ran from 2001-2002.

VERONICA MARS---creator Rob Thomas said he and Kristen Bell are working on reviing the series, "We are definitely striving to do it again... And this time around we're not going to ask the audience to pony up for anything. Kristen and I both want to figure out some way we could do a six-episode VERONICA MARS mystery. If I were a bettling man, I bet that it will happen. I just don't know when it will be."

STRANGER THINGS---co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer said the original concept for the Netflix series was more violent. Ross said, “The Eleven character, the kind of powers she has and to have a young protagonist that’s violent — it’s not E.T. It’s not a happy situation. She’s killing people, and brutally murdering them.”
Matt added, “The original pilot was much more violent. It was originally like an R-rated thing. Winona [Ryder]’s character was like, ‘Eff this, eff that!’ It felt a little bit unnecessary. I don’t feel like we sacrificed anything by toning it down a little bit.”

SHAFT---the sequel to the 1971 movie will focus on John Shaft's son in New York and will be directed by Tim Story (FANTASTIC FOUR).

WYATT EARP---untitled Western cable anthology series underway. Season 1 will star Travis Fimmel (VIKINGS) as Wyatt Earp and his violent days in Dodge City with Doc Holliday and Bat Masterson leading to the gunfight at the OK corral.

LOST---Damon Lindelof commented on a possible sequel or remake of the ABC series, "Carlton [Cuse] and I always said that we welcome any future crack at the [intellectual property]. Lost was bigger than us and bigger than [co-creator] J.J. [Abrams]. There’s something really exciting about the fact that George Lucas sold the Star Wars universe and now the people who grew up watching it are making it. Maybe the same thing could be said for Lost.”

Y: THE LAST MAN---FX programming head Nick Gad commented on the status of the tv series based on the comic book, “We’re supposed to get a script in the next couple months […] It’s going to be an ongoing series.”

After all the shit Peter did and gave them, he's one Goddamn lucky man. He should be kissing their asses right now.

Sigh.

Is this going to involve that thing I think Edison did where he electrocuted an elephant?

Oh, I can't wait to see that. frown

The that new Terminator, that final, one, sounds exactly like all the other ones, so hmm, why do we need it?

Yeah, on that Star Trek Axanar, I have exchanged notes with that Alec Peters guy, and they are so supremely arrogant, I mean yes, like it or not CBS and Paramount really - really - really do OWN Star Trek, no really, they do.

Who's supremely arrogant, Peters or CBS/Paramount? If I were CBS/Paramount, I'd just close the entire fan thing down and want all fan films either banned from distribution or destroyed. A copyright is a copyright, PERIOD!

Oh I agree, they should shut the whole thing down. And CBS/Paramount may come across tough to the fans, but they do own it, all of it, the ships, the uniforms, the sets, likeness of the actors - everything. And they are within their rights to shut it all down. They are lucky they let them do a 15 minute film at all.

Because maybe CBS appreciates its fans and that's why it will work with fans who play by the rules they have set up for fan films. It's either give some guidlines, or have none and when a fan film is made, sue each peson they can in court and bankrupt them. Well, also cease and desist letters, but that will have the same affect: piss off the fan base.

It's nice fans have the blessing to even try. I'm not sure how it stands right now in the aftermath of Peters, but time will mend what Peters did.

Lucas-film was extremely litigious, much worse than this.
Not sure if it has changed with Disney. I dount it, Disney is all about brands.

I hope they mean the *final* battle between humanity and Skynet. The last one was absolute garbage, even worse than Terminator 3, so they'd better ignore its existence and give us a great finale.

That said, I really doubt they can. Cameron should just have shot the prologue for T2 as it was originally intended, and given us the end of the war at the beginning of the film. Boom. Done!

I've actually liked EVERYTHING that has come out in the TERMINATOR universe -- including the SARAH CONNOR series, T3, T4 and GENISYS. Although to varying degrees, of course. So I welcome another one with open arms, especially under Cameron's supervision.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm sure they were all masterpieces, too. But they all boil down to this:

T2 is the only 'masterpiece'. The others are good films to varying degrees. The LEAST good is GENISYS, but still with plenty of values.

Hey, what do you know, it's that rare time of the year where you and I actually come close to agreeing. The only thing I would disagree on is T2: I think it is the best Terminator film, but it's no masterpiece. Cool though, and got a number of memorable scenes, including the hallway scene where the T1000 comes in and the scenes slows down with menacing music, or Arnold spinning aroudn that rifle, or the luquidanator passing through the prison bars, or that chase scene where the liquidinator uses his arms as devices to jam into the trunk of a car (parodied nicely on "The Simpsons").

Well, it's good that we come CLOSE to agreeing, at least, but I maintain that T2 is indeed a masterpiece -- in fact, one of the most iconic 'action' masterpieces of the 90s. HUGELY influential, and just perfect in what it sets out to do.
