I'm not sure I understand your response. Composers who did library music were sometime asked to do knockoffs based on existing music. The similarities are empirical. Whether or not the composer in question was asked to do this, or whether (s)he did it on a whim, is unknown, as is the identity of the composer.
I'm pretty sure it's from the movie Young Dillinger, composed by Shorty Rogers. I haven't seen the movie since childhood (VERY long time ago!) but I recorded a bit of it on audio cassette (my little hobby) which included that theme. Lost the cassette a million years ago, but the music lingered in my mind. Always liked it.

Ha, it might be that right enough! We're so used to having everything at our fingertips that I was genuinely surprised that there doesn't seem to be any "easy" way to confirm it. It ain't on YouTube or Dailymotion, or on anything "free" at least, there doesn't seem to have even been a version done on one of Shorty's jazz albums, no hints on SoundtrackCollector, no nowt. But since Heath and I shared at least part of our childhood(s), I'll bet my money that it's Young Dillinger.
Surprised that Shorty expert OnyaBirri didn't get that. Unless it's not that.
If you have a million bucks to spare, why not finance a CD release of Paul Dunlap's THE DESTRUCTORS? It's terrible, and nobody will buy it, but what's a million bucks to a guy who can waste it so frivolously?
Heath, I congratulate you a lot. This identification was very difficult. But I didn't check it. I didn't see the album.
Thanks for the clip. Nice to hear it again.
It's odd how completely the movie has disappeared. I haven't seen it on TV since the 70s, it's not on youtube, Daily Motion, nothing. It's probably a REALLY bad flick , but I remember getting excited by Nick Adams and Robert Conrad (I was a big WWWest fan at the time) blazing away at the FBI with their Tommy guns while that punchy theme added extra dynamism. Unless my memory cheats, Rogers' music worked great for that.
Funny, listening to the clip I can still hear the machine gun FX. Is there a doctor in the house?

Your memory and your ear magnificent. Clip from this movie's opening scene.
