:

1. Silence - This Martin Scorsese masterwork is most assuredly going to stay as my #1 of the year. I can't imagine any other film knocking it off its perch.

.

MarkY you are nothing if not predictable

Blah... blah.... blah. And who you callin' old? How about I call you "Kid"? Baby Thor, that's it. Baby Thor.

That's fine. I'm living the lifestyle of a 20-year-old at the age of 39, so I'll take it as a compliment.

I mostly use current movies as a cure for insomnia.
What did I actually like?
Hmm.

Silence- thought provoking movie that I thought about a few times after I saw it.

Our Little Sister; Umimachi Diary

Shin Godzilla

Doctor Strange

The BFG

Captain America Civil War

The Mermaid

Hidden Figures

13 Hours the Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

13 Hours the Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

I saw this on Amazon Prime, as I refused to see another Michael Bay movie in the theatre, and lo and behold, overall what a good, gripping picture he made!! I liked the characters, and while the machismo factor was still somewhat there, it wasn't overdone and while his perennial go to piece of dialogue of 'GOGOGOGOGO!" still found it's way in this picture, it's a well choreographed action film with some good characters in it. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Perhaps my low expectations helped fuel my enthusiasm for it.

Yes, 13 HOURS is on my Top 20 list too -- Michael Bay in top form (then again, I'm a big fan of his in the first place). Very gripping in its sort of closed-quarter premise and mise-en-scene, but also with a very unique visual look. So many details going on here.

Heavy on Hollywood there, SBD, but that's OK. However, there were unusually few Hollywood blockbusters that made it to my list this year. Which is strange, because there is usually a pretty good selection between the more independent or 'arty' stuff I also like.

The ones that DID make it were ARRIVAL, JASON BOURNE, HACKSAW RIDGE, 13 HOURS: THE SECRET SOLDIERS OF BENGHAZI and A MONSTER CALLS. Also, in honourable mentions: ROGUE ONE, THE HATEFUL EIGHT, DEEPWATER HORIZON and 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE.

So except for 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE and A MONSTER CALLS, none of the films on your list made much of a (positive) impact on me, I'm afraid. I'm seeing MOANA next week, in preparation for a hopeful interview with directors John Musker and Ron Clemens.

Something like...

1- Captain Fantastic
2- Manchester by the sea
3- Kubo and the two strings
4- Sing street
5- Last train to Busan
6- Money monster
7- Fantastic Fest aka Bakemono no ko
8- Mr Holmes
9- Sweet Bean aka An (Naomi Kawase)
10- Captain America: Civil War

also like a lot "The Handmaiden", "Arrival", "Paterson", "My life as a Zucchini" which could easily take a slot above.

Disappointed by "The revenant", "the salesman" (despise being a fan of previous Farhadi movies), "Toni Erdmann" and too many blockbuster to mention them!

I'm finally catching up on the remaining 2016 films I needed to see. My top 10 of the year will likely be:

1. Silence
2. La La Land
3. Paterson
4. Hail, Caesar!
5. Patriots Day
6. The Light Between Oceans
6. Lion
8. Love & Friendship
9. Manchester by the Sea
10. Hacksaw Ridge or Moonlight for now. Or something unexpected I haven't considered, but will later see and be wowed by.
