So my 'top list' of 2016 movies is finally out:

http://montages.no/2017/01/thor-joachims-topp-20-2016/

It's in Norwegian, but you'll understand the titles. Note that some of these have 2015 premieres elsewhere, but 2016 dates in Norway.

I watched a total of 226 movies last year, 163 of which were from 2016. The full list, in ranked order, can be found here:

That's a cool job, Thor! smile (And a good list. I wanted to like your #6 as the sheer visual style of it is dazzling, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. wink Nice to see Knight of Cups on your list. I saw it in 2016 as well, but I placed it on my 2015 list even though it didn't premiere in the U.S. until last March. A few of your other titles I'm unfamiliar with and need to research what they're about - it's possible that some of them still await U.S. distribution.)

I, on the other hand, generally need to wait until I can see most of a given film year's offerings on DVD - so it will probably be not until June or so when I have a workable top 20 list. I have already seen a good handful of '16 movies, though. My best of the year is shaping up like this:

1. Silence - This Martin Scorsese masterwork is most assuredly going to stay as my #1 of the year. I can't imagine any other film knocking it off its perch.

Hail, Caesar!

La La Land

Patriots Day

Love & Friendship

Manchester by the Sea

Kudos also to Hell or High Water and A Hologram for the King, although at this point I don't see either quite making my best of the year list.

Most promising 2016 films to possibly make that list?

Paterson

The Salesman

Fences

The Light Between Oceans

The Founder

Lion

Aquarius

and a trio of documentaries: Voyage of Time, Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened, and Kedi.

I think I gave "Arrival", 0 out of 5 on a rating scale up to five. I couldn't list top 20 films from the last two decades much less one year. Granted I don't see nearly as many films as Thor.

Mark, I'm really looking forward to SILENCE. Scorsese is on/off to me, but this looks like an 'on' project.

Saw MANCHESTER BY THE SEA recently. Great film, but it's a 2017 film, so I had to transfer it over to this year's list. Have to wait untill December to include it.

I don't understand what the big deal about HELL OR HIGH WATER is, and my colleagues were massively disappointed by HAIL, CAESAR, THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS and LALALAND. Another massively overrated movie I saw a few days ago was MOONLIGHT. But again, that's a 2017 film over here. Also, THE SALESMAN was VERY disappointing, and that's coming from someone who's liked pretty much all of Farhadi's movies so far.

Would like to see PATRIOT'S DAY and LOVE & FRIENDSHIP. PATERSON and AQUARIUS too, which I missed at Cannes last year.

Obviously looking forward to VOYAGE OF TIME tremdenously, but it will be a while before it premieres over here.

Oof, that's too bad, especially coming off his excellent A Separation and The Past films. I'll still be going to it (it opens here in Seattle on the 27th), but with lowered expectations.

A SEPARATION is a masterpiece and in my Top 10 that year. So was THE PAST, although a BIT lower. But with THE SALESMAN, he's trying too hard, IMO, and the theatrical backdrop feels forced (although his films always have a stageplay/Ibsen-ian feel). Perhaps you feel differently; I know it's a divisive film.

Wasn't "Jason Bourne" panned? And no Marvel films on the list. I find this all very suspicious.

Not panned, exactly, but it didn't fare as well with the critics as it should have, IMO.

Yeah, believe it or not -- there are actually great movies coming out all the time, if you choose to look beyond THE SAND PEBBLES and 2001.

Blah, blah, blah!

2016 sucked!

I don't know about most independant or foreign movies -- because they never make it to my local theaters! Of what did last year, well, I haven't gone to the movies less than in the last twelve months.

Yes, Silence is in my top 4 or 5, agreed on this one. It is not getting a lot of viewers, and that is too bad.

I would have to work pretty hard on a list in order

But there were good films this past year for me;

Silence
Hell or High Water
Eye in the Sky
Moana
Kubo
Finding Dory
Manchester by the Sea
Star Trek Beyond
Midnight Special
Petes Dragon
The Finest Hours

I would like to see Hell or High Water or Silence win a Best Picture Oscar, but that is not going to happen.

You do come off as a walking stereotype of the 'grouchy, bitter old man', Rory, sorry to say. I'm sure I'm not the only one who have this impression. Almost every single post you make on this forum is akin to "this sucks!", "everything these days is bad" or "I hate everyone and everything!". I've been contemplating creating a thread in your honour, asking you to list things you DO like. I think I've seen you post something positive only once or twice for as long as you've been here.

In any case, I'm aware that indie or foreign films aren't shown in mainstream multiplexes in the US. But surely, you must have film clubs, cinemateques etc. that show these things? Or if not, there are any number of online viewing platforms, like mubi.com. I just don't buy the excuse "they only show Hollywood blockbusters in my local cinema, so I refuse/am unable to view all these other new films that are praised".
