This Technicolored slice of escapism has been airing on Film 4 in the UK several times over the past week in a rather good print, apart that is from a sound problem with the Main Title. Just as Skinner's credit fades into producer Walter Wanger's credit, the music becomes jumbled and loses the melody line. Does anyone know if this is possibly carried over from the DVD as a rather ham-fisted attempt to mask some damage to the original print? Or maybe the music isn't just as I remembered it of course!

This youtube link is a speeded up version of the film but it seems to be the same print with the "defective" Main Title...

I'll have to run my 16mm original (struck long before the days of video) and compare it with the acetates, but I'm pretty sure that was a cut made by the music editor at the time of release.

Your invaluable input would be much appreciated, Ray, whenever you get the chance to run the print. I'm curious to know if my memory is playing tricks or not, but I just seem to remember the music going into all-out Rimsky-Korsakov mode at the point that is jumbled in the TV print.

... but I'm pretty sure that was a cut made by the music editor at the time of release.

Well, I was wrong! That cut is exclusive to the video transfer. Below is a youtube of the main titles to my 16mm print. As you can hear, there is no cut in the music. Also below is a link to the original acetate recording of same.

If youtube takes down this post for infringement, I will update with audio-only file:

By the way, for sprocketheads, this is NOT a dye-transfer print. Universal never struck their pre-'48 Technicolor films in IB.

Ray, thank you so much for checking this out. It's good to know my memory isn't failing me as much as I feared! I wonder why Universal made such a clumsy cut for the TV print? It's the best part of the Main Title. Would this cut be on the DVD too, do you think?

Oddly enough, another Skinner score suffers from a minor but irritating fault on the Film4 print for Magnificent Obsession screened recently. Just after Jane Wyman says something like "I think I can see some light", there are two prominent drop-outs in the sound during Rock's reply.

Thanks again, Ray, for your response and for posting the clips.
