Anyone else remember that freaky made-for-TV movie, "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark"? (At least that's what I think it was called --- I only saw it once.) That movie gave me the chills when I was a little kid. Of course, if I saw it now, I probably wouldn't think much of it, but it stuck in the back of my mind... Same goes for the Karen Black TV movie, "Trilogy of Terror". That little Zuni Fetish Doll (or whatever it was called) that chases her around her apartment with a knife was creepy beyond description.

And Dark Night of the Scarecrow!

I'm reminded of the night when Star Trek: The Motion Picture aired on ABC, I think in '82, and the last 30 minutes of it was audio only due to some sort of broadcasting glitch. My dad and I were horrified to sit there listening to the finale of the movie having no clue what was going on.

Remember when ABC showed Star Trek III for the first time, and started the film once the Enterprise got back to Earth? Completely skipping the opening scenes introducing Kruge.

I saw a similar version of ST III on broadcast television. The film was heavily edited, but all for the better. Much of the cringe worthy stuff was removed for the run time. It's remarkable what a good editor can do.

I want a good editor to have a go at Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit". There's a great movie hiding in those ten hours.

I was watching something last week set in the early '70s and in it was a TV from back then. I grimace at the sight of those old tube sets. I have no nostalgia for them at all, nor watching movies cut up with commercials.

Maybe your right, "The Hobbit" is a slog as is.

I have fond memories of being a kid and watching the First Television presentations of all of the Original PLANET OF THE APES Movies on CBS.

Loved Made for TV Movies in the late 60's and 70's as well. "The Movie of the Week, PRESENTING THE WORLD PREMIERE OF AN ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE PRODUCED ESPECIALLY FOR ABC!" Can still hear the announcer's voice and hear that Great Burt Bacharach Theme. His "Nikki" Theme written for his daughter and made famous by the ABC Movie of the Week!

Burt Bacharach's "Nikki" Theme:

And let's not forget A.B.C.'s great miniseries, starting with "Q.B.VII". I remember when they were showing the promos with Anthony Hopkins as Sir Adam Kelno on the stand before the miniseries aired. Unfortunately, they're not included on the "Q.B.VII" 2 D.V.D. set (but possibly they will be included on the Blu ray?)

I just wanted to add that I saw your post, mate.
I didn't want you to think that you weren't heard.
There's a bunch of us here that cherish that movie (as well as "Trilogy Of Terror"), but there already were a couple of pre-existing threads about it.
In fact, the first time I saw this thread, those movies occurred to me, too. smile

If you saw it at just the right age, your were scarred for life!

I remember when C.B.S. first broadcast "Ben~Hur" on 2/12/'71, . . .

That television showing was my first viewing of BEN-HUR. Given that it was shot in one of the widest formats possible (Camera 65 / Ultra Panavision), I'm amazed that it played as well as it did with fully half of the picture missing (and in mono sound).

And any idea what was the last regularly scheduled theatrical film that aired during one of these slots?

Since 2006, ABC has technically scheduled a Saturday Night Movie, to replace its Fall programming of college football games, after the football season has ended. But week to week, those hours are just as likely to be filled by repeats of series shows rather than movies. And sometimes the slot is filled by recurring programming brought in at mid-season. In recent years that has included NBA basketball games. ABC has also occasionally scheduled Saturday night movies in the spring (when it has the annual showing of THE TEN COMMANDMENTS) and summer.

As to the last time that one of the three major U.S. networks programmed a regularly scheduled movie night into its new Fall season, you have to go back to 2005. This was the last year that CBS offered its CBS Sunday Movie, and the last year that ABC started the Fall with the ABC Saturday Movie of the Week rather than college football. By 2005, the CBS series was primarily made up of made-for-television films. But the ABC series was almost exclusively theatrical films.

As it turns out, the 2005-06 season of the ABC series was its longest, because in earlier years it shared its time slot with "The Wonderful World of Disney," which also often ran movies. One of the theatrical films shown most recently on the abbreviated ABC Saturday Movie of the Week was TOY STORY (1995) on May 21, 2016. As for the 2005-2006 last full season of the series (39 weeks), it started off with ARMAGEDDON (1998) on September 17, 2005 and ended with PEARL HARBOR (2001) on August 26, 2006.

No problem, Ock! Thanks for the response! smile

Indeed, those films were chilling to the young... and perhaps old alike. embarrassment
