The perks are original mono audio (apparently omitted from earlier releases)
Turns out that mono tracks on this are the same tracks as usual. The same overly loud exterior engine rumble in some episodes of the first season and ANY engine rumble in the second season episodes. The only "correction" is putting the "cello" first season back onto The Corbomite Maneuver.
There were also glitches in the effects scenes. Arena, for example, has a couple of TOS-R effects even when you choose the original versions; such as the smoking crater and added landscape on Cestus III during the episode title credit and the blinking Gorn.
Really, a disappointing and sloppy set. The commentary during City on the Edge of Forever, with Mark Altman, Scott Mantz and Roger Lay Jr is awful. Super fans bragging about how much they know and getting facts wrong minutes later always makes me roll my eyes. Useless.

Must be a "story" glitch. A story is a script which saves disc space by allowing multiple versions of the same video on the same disc by jumping between segments, as necessary. Using an extractor (cough, cough) the TOS and TOS-R versions come out cleanly.

I don't know if I'd say suckered so much as hyped. The actual supplements would fit onto a single disc without the episodes. And if the "Vault" segments were re-edited to remove the reflexive fluff ("After 50 years, who would expect to see something new? I'll be first in line!"), it could have been made even shorter. Don't know why they add that junkāthe viewer has already bought the discs.
And why do they waste neodymium magnets on packaging like that?
Naming it the "Roddenberry Vaults" was the first clue it was over-hyped. But selling old product in new packaging is nothing new. And they added a little something extra to sweeten the pot and make it irresistible for the true Star Trek fan. The packaging was also intended for ppl who know nothing about Star Trek but might pick it up for the Star Trek fan in their family for Xmas or birthdays. Lets face it people are suckers for gimmicks.

Not an exaggeration for the source - this is just part of one aisle in a warehouse of his stored films. You expect a good portion of discs to be about this material, but there's probably less than an hour's worth. And any TREK fan would already have the series, so no need for the "top 12" with or without new commentary (although the music-only tracks were a nice perk).
Reading through this thread has made me very glad that the price kept me waiting. Now I just won't waste my money on it! They should have just skipped the episodes and made it out of unseen footage.
