I find the score enjoyable for what it is – a mashup of others’ work with a little bit of original material mixed in. It’s just like much of today’s music, especially hip-hop, etc., with “lifting” and all. There’s Goldsmith’s and Goldenthal’s music for Alien, some Outland (Goldsmith), and some of JNH’s Goldsmith-lite score for The Fugitive in a mostly good blend. I saw the film this past Saturday and I was a little unsure as to how I felt about the score as it and the movie unfolded. I was thinking “This is how the original Alien should have sounded back in ’79.” as the opening credits went by. I was unsure as to whether to feel relieved and gratified to finally hear Goldsmith’s music in the theater or to feel patronized as if it was Scott’s way of saying “Right, here’s your bloody Goldmith music! Enjoy, and sod off about it!” I fully realize it was his film and he could do with the score whatever he wished just as he could with the cast, crew, etc. Anyway, a likeable enough score, but one I probably won’t buy, unless it becomes available on download for $2.99 on Amazon.

I just wanna know one thing. Is the Goldsmith ALIEN theme played wrong deliberately, or is it just a sign of the times?
