We are glad to present our final batch of releases for 2016…

THE BAD NEWS BEARS TRILOGY (3-CD)
Music Scored by Jerry Fielding, Craig Safan and Paul Chihara
Limited edition of 1000 units
Release date: 12/19/2016

Quartet Records and Paramount Pictures present a mammoth 3-CD box set with the world premiere release of The Bad News Bears trilogy, just in time to celebrate its 40th anniversary!

The Bad News Bears was a highly successful American sports comedy directed by Michael Ritchie. Starring Walter Matthau and Tatum O’Neal, the plot features an aging, down-on-his-luck ex-minor leaguer coaching a team of misfits in an ultra-competitive California little league. The film was followed by two sequels, The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training (1977) and The Bad News Bears Go to Japan (1978). In addition, there were also a short-lived 1979–80 CBS television series and a 2005 remake also produced by Paramount.

Three important composers were involved in the trilogy: veteran Jerry Fielding scored the original film, while younger composers Craig Safan and Paul Chihara scored the sequels. Surprisingly, despite the different styles of each composer—each of whom has a distinct musical personality—the result was a perfectly unified and structured musical trilogy.

At the request of director Michael Ritchie, Fielding mainly adapted his score from the popular opera Carmen by Bizet, much as he had done two years earlier with Mahler’s first symphony for The Gambler. Besides the Bizet arrangements, Fielding also incorporated a few original cues. For the sequels, Craig Safan did something similar with the “1812 Overture” by Tchaikovsky, and Paul Chihara adapted the popular “The Mikado” by Gilbert & Sullivan. The result is three cool, fun and surprising scores.

The audio was carefully mastered by José Vinader from original stereo mixes and multi-tracks stored in the Paramount vaults, and the 28-page full-color booklet includes liner notes and scores analysis by John Takis, who also co-produced the box set.

LE DUE STAGIONI DELLA VITA
Music Composed by Ennio Morricone
Limited edition of 500 units
Release date: 12/19/2016

Quartet Records and GDM present the long-awaited remastered reissue of one the most radiant and beautiful Ennio Morricone scores.

Co-written by Samy Pavel and Catherine Alcover (both of whom also appear in the film), Le due stagione della vita is about two stages in the life of a man. The first stage of the narrative explores his boyhood as he learns from his father that his biological mother is still alive. Following the passing of his father, our hero sets out to start his own life. The second stage of the story continues with the protagonist’s adult life as he tries to make ends meet as a musician. Whereas the boy is played by Stéphane Gass, the grown man is played by the film’s director, Samy Pavel.

What makes Le due stagione della vita so interesting is that composer Ennio Morricone took a cue from the film’s dual structure by creating two long suites for both sides of the original LP (a brief choral piece entitled "Passaggio" was used as a transition). Side A of the record featured the romantic material associated with the protagonist’s upbringing, including the viola solo of Dino Asciolla and of course Edda dell’Orso as the matriarch’s calling voice. Side B on the other hand featured atonal music involving two choirs: I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni and Voci Bianche, as well as other talented musicians letting all hell loose.

The original LP had only the two suites and the brief connecting piece. The same program made its first appearance on CD in the early nineties on Point Records. A later CD, released by Saimel, expanded the program with the film versions and a few previously unreleased alternates, including source music. The new CD by Quartet Records adds yet another unused version of the main theme. Mastered by Claudio Fuiano from first-generation master tapes vaulted at EMI General Music in Italy. The 8-page liner notes by Gergely Hubai discuss the film, the composer and the score.

FANTASMA D’AMORE (2-CD)
Music Composed and Conducted by Riz Ortolani
Limited edition of 500 units
Release date: 12/19/2016

Quartet Records and Gruppo Sugar are glad to present the ultimate edition of an unforgettable Riz Ortolani masterpiece.

Directed by Dino Risi in 1981, Fantasma d’amore (also known as Ghost of Love) stars Marcello Mastroianni and Romy Schneider as star-crossed lovers in a mystical story about love that conquers all—even death. Over two decades after their affair has ended, Nino Monti (Mastroianni) meets his old flame Anna Brigatti Zighi (Schneider) who seems to have lost not only her beauty, but her fortune as well. Upon recounting the events to his friends, Nino is shocked to learn that Anna is supposed to be dead as one of his buddies had signed the death certificate three years earlier....

The film marked the third (and final) collaboration between director Dino Risi and composer Ortolani—each film bringing out something different from the composer. Fantasma has a rather nostalgic score colored with a hint of jazz and remorseful wish fulfillment, courtesy of legendary clarinetist Benny Goodman. According to the clarinetist’s biography. “Benny Goodman: Listen to His Legacy,” Ortolani presented the tunes to Goodman in New York and the musician gladly agreed to record the solos for the main theme, "Phantom of Love," and the secondary theme, "Unforgettable Love."

Fantasma d’amore was originally released on LP by CAM, and while there have been several CD releases, they have only replicated that original LP program. Apart from the remastered original album on Disc 1, Disc 2 features the complete film score, including a large amount of previously unreleased material. The audio has been mastered by Claudio Fuiano from first-generation master tapes. The-full color, 8-page booklet includes liner notes by Gergely Hubai that discuss the film, the composer and the score.

EL FARO DE LAS ORCAS
Music Composed by Pascal Gaigne
Release date: 12/19/2016

Exciting and moving new score composed by Pascal Gaigne (El olivo, Castillos de cartón, Lasa & Zabala, Verbo) for the new romantic adventure film directed by Gerardo Olivares.

Lola travels with Tristán, her son with autism, to the end of the world to meet Beto, a wildlife guard who has a very special relationship with the wild killer whales in Argentine Patagonia. Lola's determination to fight for her son, the peculiar personality of Tristán and her special relationship with nature will make the lives of all of them change forever. Based on a true story, El faro de las orcas is about the search for life’s essential values and our encounter with the spirit of Nature.

Composing the music for this film was a very special challenge for Pascal Gaigne. He gave his score a kind of romantic and impressionist color, with delicate orchestration and a beautiful, flowing leitmotif that unfolds slowly throughout the entire score. The music is performed by The Bratislava Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Hernando.

Great! A new Pascal Gaigne score. I was hoping for that ('a composer familiar to our label'). The other ones are interesting too, another Fielding at that (or is it Bizet? ... well, a bit of both I guess). Thanks Quartet!

That's Hollywood for you - always with the hyperbole and exaggeration.

The cover art for the Bad News Bears Trilogy is almost worth the price of admission all on its own - and I haven't even seen any of the films! (Dunno why, just never got around to 'em.)

The Gaigne sounds lovely as usual. I'll have to check it out on Spotify in full and then consider adding the CD to my next bulk order on SAE.

Question about FANTASMA D’AMORE.
Does previous versions of original album also contain studio conversations before some tracks?

Excellent taste in cover art there Sean. That's from Jack Davis of MAD magazine fame. He passed away this past summer.

LE DUE STAGIONI DELLA VITA
Music Composed by Ennio Morricone

Of the over 400 scores I have from Ennio this remains THE MOST BEAUTIFUL. It is also one of the most obscure. And even though this is a straight re-issue, which I usually skip, I may make this an exception for the new mastering and because it IS my favorite. I believe that may also go for Morricone himself. When he created his own label GM he made it the first score he released. When I first tracked that out of print LP I couldn't believe this gorgeous music wasn't one of his most popular. I found out why. The film bombed. AND when Ennio first went on tour he included it in a piece called "5 Canzoni". Certainly held a high position for him in his heart in his early career.

Thanks, TZfan - I knew that was an artist who just passed away, couldn't remember his name and didn't have time to look it up. Jack Davis, of course! Classic.

This lovely remembrance from Mark Evanier is what alerted me originally.

You know, this cd set turns out to be a great tribute for this artist - because the music seems to be a perfect score to his work overall.

I am honored my opinion matters that much for you. A heads up about the original album structure. The LP had Morricone assembling the melodic music, practically monothematic, into an 18:18 suite and the atonal material into a 14:58 suite. Plus one linking melodic one. The expansion added more melodic material and this new version has one additional edition of the main theme. Please let me know if you think this is anywhere near the pantheon I place it for myself for you.

It's so great to see finally one more Fielding released, it may be the last premiere, who knows?
It shows the other side of the maestro and he began his career in arranging after all. So many thanks to Quartet for this! smile

If it's anywhere near as good as his quality work adapting Mahler for The Gambler, it's a must have!
