Late to this discussion, but to Mr. Audio's point, Morton Stevens did some wonderful work for THRILLER. I too have pulled the music from the M&E tracks on the DVD release. In my opinion, Mort's work may have been more consistently entertaining on THRILLER than Jerry's (and I've been a Jerry fan since the premiere of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. over 50 years ago).

That said, I fully understand James' point. We can't expect him to sink his own money into something he doesn't a) expect to do well or b) love to absolute pieces.

Very interested to see what we finally get.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one.

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy Jerry Goldsmith's TV work and my favorite TV score by him happens to be THE HOMECOMING - A CHRISTMAS STORY which Mort Stevens hired Jerry to score since he was Music Supervisor for CBS back in 1971, but with that said, I just feel that Mort's TV scores are always much more musically interesting than Jerry's TV work.

Again, it's just an a opinion, however I would still love to see the work of Goldsmith, Stevens and Rugolo included in a THRILLER box set as this would present "musically" the best of the series...:-)

My only regret about the Image Entertainment "Thriller" D.V.D. set is that Stevens' score from "Pigeons From Hell" (my all time favorite Stevens "Thriller" score) wasn't included as an isolated music track. But at least "The Premature Burial" and "Waxworks" were. Goldsmith was certainly a wonderful teacher and mentor to Stevens, and I'm sure that Jerry was grateful for Stevens (at that time C.B.S.' West Coast Music Director) to have him to score "The Homecoming" when his career was in a decline (when he only scored two feature films in '71).

I didn't assume (and I wasn't the only one who concluded) it was Thriller. James posted recording clips. It's definite. The only question is what form it will take, as I very much doubt it would be the complete Goldsmith Thriller scores (there are too many). So it'll either be excerpts from each score or a handful of the best in complete form.

Hey Yavar,

Just to be clear, I had been following the thread, but there were so many posts, that I got lost in it. One of your posts was the first I recall to mention Thriller, but it just wasn't clear to me whether James had confirmed it or not (and I'm not on Facebook to see what he posts there).

All that to say, I meant the best and wasn't accusing you of anything. I'm a fellow Goldsmith lover, so I always appreciate your posts. Now I just need to try to find more space on my Goldsmith shelf for this release!

Spontaneously enthused by this thread, I spontaneously followed up on my Tubular perusals and found myself watching the episode "God Grante That She Lye Still". Actually, the YouTube uploads are fairly decent quality, and I liked that episode quite a bit. Very Gothic horror, with an opening scene straight out of BLACK SUNDAY (aka A Million Other Things - the one with Babs Steele as a witch) and/ or CITY OF THE DEAD (aka HORROR HOTEL), both shot roughly around the same time as the Thriller episode.

The Goldsmith score is absolutely excellent. Small-scale, chilling, and very haunting. Quite beautiful in places. There's an appropriately Olde England flavour to some of it. It really put me in mind of something... might be one of the themes in Russ Garcia's TIME MACHINE. What's the connection there? Or am I thinking of Roy Budd's KIDNAPPED. Olde England? Olde Scotland? It's great.

This one might be on the upcoming set. It's on zooba's list of six, and James has confirmed we're getting four of those (plus two others). I'll be happy if this score's on it.

And they always do "clank" don't they, and echo too as the church is usually almost empty when I am there. Not a lot of people call in to say a prayer or light candles I guess.

So, yes indeed, "longhair" music is a term (and usually a disparaging one) for classical music generally, not any particular style. Fine for you Onya if you have your own personal definition for what it means (I'm assuming the more atonal classical music of the mid 20th century, as evidenced by Goldsmith's City of Fear), but that's why Ray and I scratch our heads when use the term so specifically.

I have had a different experience than yours. As a musician, I can say that my many musician colleagues and friends over the decades have humorously used "longhair" to distinguish the 20th century stuff that we love from the warhorses that are typically programmed for the blue-haireds. I suppose I am using "warhorse" and "blue-haired" incorrectly also.

I thought it was about conductors of classical music... "Leopold! Leopold!"

My only regret about the Image Entertainment "Thriller" D.V.D. set is that Stevens' score from "Pigeons From Hell" (my all time favorite Stevens "Thriller" score) wasn't included as an isolated music track.

The film itself has a Music/Effects channel like the other episodes (calling them "isolated music tracks" is misleading since they have sound effects), and is available among collectors. Not sure why the dvd company omitted that one. Like the other MFX tracks on the dvds, the FX can be intrusive.

Wonderful video! Love watching the chamber orchestra sized ensemble at work. This is going to be a favorite release for me this year, whatever else comes our way.

Can't quite believe that a new recording of Jerry Goldsmith's Thriller is coming soon. I'm not sure we can fully realize just what a great period we're living in, even with all the many challenges to film music recordings' long-term health.

So true Sean.......I have to pinch myself to really believe we're actually getting this early masterpiece from Goldsmith. It reminds me of the time, years ago, when Varese released a new recording of Herrmann's Trouble With Harry. Never thought I'd ever see it!
Some miracles happen.....All thanks to the dedication of a group of people with vision.

Can you imagine re-recordings of the TV work of Williams, Herrmann, Goldsmith, etc.
7th heaven and then some!
