Merry Christmas Everyone,

This is my 7th annual Christmas contest CD giveaway and I'm starting it a few days early this year because I'm going out of town next weekend.

This year there will be two winners. The prizes will be Intrada's wonderful 6CD box set of Elmer Bernstein's spectacular score for The Ten Commandments.

I will place the names of all participants in a large stainless steel mixing bowl and pull the names in a blind draw. That's as fair as any other method. Electronic or otherwise.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you would like a chance to win one of the box sets please do the following....

Leave a post on this thread telling me which Christmas themed movie or TV special has been your favorite throughout the years. It can be either a theatrical film or made-for-TV special (live action or animated). Give a brief explanation as to what makes it special for you.

There...wasn't that easy?

Note: The quality of your answer will not increase or decrease your chance of winning. It simply serves as your entry into my contest.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Anyone may participate. Worldwide delivery. New members are welcome but I'm asking current members to be honest and not create a new account to increase your chances of winning.

  • Please do not post YouTube videos.

  • Please don't copy my original post by clicking the Reply button. I just find that annoying when I'm trying to read everyone's answers.

  • I will accept entries into this contest until 8pm EST on Wednesday, December 7. The names of the winners will be posted two hours later at 10pm EST. I will then ask the winners to send me an email with their name and address.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK. That's it. Let's have some fun with this and I'll be seeing you on the evening of the 7th. Let the posting begin!

    WOW!
I'm IN (even if I know that I'll not win - I never win in contests with such fantastic prizes)!!!

As about my favorite Christmas movies...
Home Alone & Home Alone 2 - as main symbol (it's on air at our TV probably as long as I remember myself - it's some kind of tradition smile )
And I simply love it - humor, music... That's all my explanation )))

And there is another one. Well, it's not my FIRST association with Christmas movie, but when you asked, I suddenly remember about it. It's Jingle All The Way. Why I remember it? 'Cause it was our family FIRST VHS EVER! smile

ps I hope that one day I'll find place in my shopping cart and order both Intrada's CD with score (if I don't win TTC big grin ) )))

Wow, Adam B., how incredibly generous and kind of you to offer such an awesome gift. Okay, I'm in too.

My favorite Christmas movie, one that gets played every year without fail, is "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation." It is (arguably) Chevy Chase's best movie. Every element of it works so well, and it is just so funny.

A close second is "A Christmas Story." It's the equal to "Christmas Vacation" in laughs, and it reminds me of what Christmas (and life in general) was like for me growing up. Overall, I actually think it's a better movie than the Chevy Chase movie, but I rank it just below because I used to be a manager for Suncoast Motion Picture Company, and we used to play it in the store to death every holiday season. Between that and the endless TBS showings every year, I have just been over exposed to it, so it has lost some of its charm.

This is a very generous offer!!!

My favorite Christmas movie is also Christmas Vacation. Reason: Almost 30 years later it still makes me laugh nonstop. That's pretty rare!

    Fingers crossed...

Two films - Mr.Magoos Christmas Carol, because the songs are so touching
And Gift of the Magi section from the film O. Henrys Full House, again, a very touching and moving story, made more so by Alfred Newmans score.

I'm going to have to say "A Christmas Story". It's the only one.

I just asked for suggestions a few days ago in an Non-Film Score Discussion thread for mroe Christmas movies:
    http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?pageID=2&forumID=7&threadID=85189&archive=0

I love to catch "Bad Santa" when possible each year, but it's really more of a movie using Christmas and not a Christmas-themed film.

ACS is chuck full of humor and fun. I know many scnes by heart, a number of quotes (hell, I just used the "Drink ... more .. Ovaltine" line in a caption contest at another forum I post at; no prize, just a fun contest), and it reflects true life still in some ways, for me or people I have known:

    Who doesn't love a Christmas tree? NAZI's, that's who.

Who doesn't smile seeing a young kids open a presant and being all happy.

Who here hasn't at least once in their life known somebody who patrols the air conditioning?

Or learned that sometimes bullies have to be smacked around a little; then you learn they're just whimps with big mouths.

Encountered a mall Santa who wasn't that thrilled.

Or found themsleves on a holiday, like Christmas, with no food because they either forgot or a palce closed early? Hell, I had this happen to me on Thanksgiving (more places shut down completely this year than previously).

The score, the stock music, it's a special time captured by the film that has gone bye-bye.

    "Ohhh ... fffuuudddgggeee..."

I agree with others that Adam is incredibly generous with this offer.

I love all the usual suspects, and I was raised on the animated short movie How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

However, my favorite is an hour long movie that I first saw as a teen on TV. It is AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS, a short opera composed by Gian Carlo Menotti. My mom made me sit down and watch it. Of course, I thought opera was for nerds, but I was instantly hooked all the gorgeous melodies in this touching story of the Three Wise Men visiting a crippled boy and his mother. The men were on their way to honor the Christ child when they stopped for this visit. The arias are lovely and the story can wring tears from a stone. It truly is about loving and sacrifice.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzx-s46vjpY

The above is a very poor youtube of the original Amahl TV presentation.

I hope some day we get a current remake of this lovely story with its beautiful music.

Wow, what a wonderful offer! smile

Well, I choose Robert Zemeckis's "A Christmas Carol". Dickens's timeless story about the Victorian miser Scrooge has always been one of my all-time favourite stories and for me, it is as essential for Christmas as the church visit on Christmas Eve itself. I remember this cold November evening seven years ago when I went to our local cinema, incredibly excited before watching the movie - a really wonderful experience!
Alan Silvestri's score will always be one of my favourite Christmas score, the orchestral writing is absolutely gorgeous and the joyous main theme is simply outstanding. Highly recommended. smile

Home Alone 2 Lost In New York
Because it has the best Christmas score ever.
Thank you for the very generous opportunity !

...which Christmas themed movie or TV special has been your favorite throughout the years...

It's a Wonderful Life and Die Hard were favorites for years.
But since 2004 The Polar Express has become a yearly tradition.
I'm watching our 7 year old struggle with the idea that Santa might not be real so this movie is becoming important in his development of faith and belief.

I would go back to 1971 to the original Waltons "HOMECOMING: A CHRISTMAS STORY," with Patricia Neal.
It captured all of the nostalgia and the magic of a rural Americana family Christmas.
The true spirit of family is found in its moving closing exchange: 'Christmas is a season when we give tokens of love. In that house, we received not tokens but love itself... More than thirty years and three thousand miles away, I can still hear those sweet voices: "Goodnight John-Boy... Goodnight Elizabeth... Goodnight Mama..."'

Very nice idea Adam. Not a real christmas movie, but i like "Reindeer games" by John Frankenheimer. The way Ben Affleck renounces on all the money from the robbery , throws it in the letter boxes and you see him in the cercle of his family....thats the real meaning of christmas.

    Agreed. What a wonderful offer!

While not a Christmas special in the traditional sense, The Little Drummer Boy has always been one of my favorite Rankin-Bass specials and I always try to watch it at least once a year during this time of year, as I do with King of Kings.

Also, the Richard Williams animated adaptation of A Christmas Carol (which has Alastair Sim and Michael Hordern reprising their roles as Scrooge and Marley respectively) has quickly become one of my favorite Christmas movies in just a few short years.

My special Christmas film is "Die Hard 2". Because it´s a very entertainment movie and the score of Mr. Michael Kamen is a masterpiece!!!!

    Thanks

Favourite film- animated 'The Snowman' written by Raymond Briggs.

Although it can be seen as a bleak tale of loss and sorrow, it is something which those of us who have lost loved ones over the years reflect upon, especially this time of the year.

It's a Wonderful Life, The Polar Express, Home Alone and Christmas Vacation are the movies we watch every year, although I'm not sure which one I would pick if I was limited to watching only one. Thanks for your generous offer.
