I believe that the RCA/Sony sounds more natural and open, including ROTJ, while the arista, the OSTs, and the recent ultimate digital collection sounds like its a muffled sound, even when controlling for volume differences. Like there was too much noise reduction applied.

No. I literally A/B compared them all this week including this morning controlling for volume differences. RCA / Sony is the best to my ears, with a slight edge to the Sony. But this is just my own subjective listening experience, I actually don't know the details of how each release was made and what theoretically should be best. All I know is that after a meticulous comparison, I for one prefer the Sony.

The sound on the RCA/Sony ESB and ROTJ is noticeably inferior to that of the box set.

As I stated above, I have made a meticulous comparison and determined that the RCA/Sony is superior for all three films to my ears. I have not made a mistake, I simply hold a different opinion. After all the time I've spent listening to these so closely to compare them, reading about them is less likely to change my opinion. But to each his own, I'm OK with the fact that most people here prefer the Arista for Jedi, it's just different tastes in sound. And I would think that for those who like the Arista sound, they might find that empire is, depending on the cue, better on the ultimate digital collection (available as an HD download at HDtracks.com) than on the Arista. Although, to be fair I should state that my comparison was not made on every single track, but on 7 or 8 of my favorite cues per film - so only meticulous on the tracks I like!

My fingers are crossed that Disney gets a hold of the master tapes of all of these scores, and releases them in the best sound possible. -Rick O. Agreed. Would love to see it given the Matessino, Titus, Bond, LLL treatment in the form of a glorious box set. (I know, Intrada is Disney...)
