What version is the best sounding one? Listening today to Battle of Yavin and the sound seems a bit pinched. Is there a remastered version which really improves the sound?

I think the general consensus is the four disc box set.

Most would agree that the Anthology 4CD Box Set has the best sound, though it is less complete than the Special Edition releases of 1997. The Polydor Return of the Jedi is also an incredible sounding disc.

I disagree with some of these comments. The RCA 2-CD SET of A NEW HOPE (and later the Sony) sounds the best for that particular title. The 4-CD Anthology set has better sounding EMPIRE and JEDI, however, especially JEDI! The 2CD set of JEDI sounds like utter batha poodoo. Can't believe it got by quality control.

(As a side note: when are we getting the "ORIGINAL 2-LP" version of EMPIRE STRIKES BACK released on CD???)

The Special Edition NEW HOPE sounds brittle and harsh to me. I much prefer the sound of the 4-CD Arista set, though it doesn't always use the film takes.

To each his own. I agree that the Anthology set is priceless

I love all three of the RCA/Victor 2CD sets. Even Jedi. I'm easy to please.

I've never really compared the different releases. While the Anthology 4CD set is dear to my heart, the expanded two CD sets wins out in the end for the extra music.

I believe that the RCA/Sony sounds more natural and open, including ROTJ, while the arista, the OSTs, and the recent ultimate digital collection sounds like its a muffled sound, even when controlling for volume differences. Like there was too much noise reduction applied.

I think you mean the other way around…? There was a lot of noise reduction applied to the RCA/Sony ROTJ.

No. I literally A/B compared them all this week including this morning controlling for volume differences. RCA / Sony is the best to my ears, with a slight edge to the Sony. But this is just my own subjective listening experience, I actually don't know the details of how each release was made and what theoretically should be best. All I know is that after a meticulous comparison, I for one prefer the Sony.

The RCA and Sony sound the best becuase the source tapes used were the original master sessions. The Arista 4cd Anthology used tapes which were dubbed a few generations down off the original masters. The sound quality upgrade is unmistakeable. A New Hope never sounded better. This is demo disc material.

You must have switched the discs then. The sound on the RCA/Sony ESB and ROTJ is noticeably inferior to that of the box set.

To me, any of the 2-CD versions of the Special Edition of "A New Hope" sound better than the 4-CD Anthology, but specifically the RCA/Victor.

"Empire" and "Jedi" might be a different situation, however....

Once again no. As I stated above, I have made a meticulous comparison and determined that the RCA/Sony is superior for all three films to my ears. I have not made a mistake, I simply hold a different opinion. After all the time I've spent listening to these so closely to compare them, reading about them is less likely to change my opinion. But to each his own, I'm OK with the fact that most people here prefer the Arista for Jedi, it's just different tastes in sound. And I would think that for those who like the Arista sound, they might find that empire is, depending on the cue, better on the ultimate digital collection (available as an HD download at HDtracks.com) than on the Arista. Although, to be fair I should state that my comparison was not made on every single track, but on 7 or 8 of my favorite cues per film - so only meticulous on the tracks I like!

The two disc special editions never leave my shelf. ANH has good sound but the other two are DREADFUL.

Arista Box or bust. Accept no substitute.

My fingers are crossed that Disney gets a hold of the master tapes of all of these scores, and releases them in the best sound possible.

Agreed. Would love to see it given the Matessino, Titus, Bond, LLL treatment in the form of a glorious box set. (I know, Intrada is Disney...)

Nothing wrong in the sound of the 2CD Jedi set per se, simply that it fluctuates noticeably. I'm used to the sound of the 2CD sets and like it even though I have the Arista box from back in the day, but when I finally began to notice the inconsistency in sound it's hard to unhear it =/ It's the change in sound that bothers me, not the actual quality.

The RCA/Sony Jedi sound sounds like it's underwater or as if somebody threw a blanket over your speakers and you aren't hearing everything. It's inferior and positively dreadful and awful all at the same time. There's an unmentionable with "brightened" sound...the difference is night and day. The mix on the RCA/Sony Jedi set is so badly muffled that there are instruments and portions of the score that are not even heard and basically muted or inaudible. The Emperor's Death is the most obvious cue I can think of where the sound is horribly compromised...there are woodwinds and weird synthesized eerie effects that are not present on the Sony release. It really changes the whole sound of the cue since it's not "all there" if you will. It's not even about tastes really because it is the actual sound quality that is so poor, not the way it is presented or equalized/mastered creatively.
