Ran across this Youtube video that compares and contrasts just the thing we've been talking about. You fans of the '76 version won't like it at all.
I was never a fan of the 76er, and I saw it as a kid in the theater during it's original run. While it's not a good film, I saw it again about a year ago on Netflix and found it more enjoyable than 90% of what I've seen in the last two decades.
Well I'm a fan of the '76 version & I enjoyed it. The '76 is a guilty pleasure (& by that I mean that I enjoy it but couldn't really defend it). One thing the original & seventies versions have in common is that they are set in the time they're made, whereas Jackson's is a period piece, just like next years version.
I liked the 76 one as a kid a lot. It was on TV the most as i recall. Saw it recently and enjoyed it less so but still found it entertaining. I like it had some different angles from the original and i always find Grodin very watchable.
I have all of those announced extras on DVD. I hope he doesn't scrimp like with the LOTR Appendices which were just re-released on DVD along with the bluray releases. I love all versions of this story.
