Having posted about this in November, it's not until today I got to hear the whole CD. It's very good indeed! "The Black Tent" suite is definitely a highlight, but the star of the show for me is "Shake Hands With the Devil". And I particularly like the soprano in "Mermaid's Song". Marvelous addition to the Alwyn/Chandos series.
Devotees of William Alwyn, particularly here in the UK, will be interested to hear of a new radio programme broadcast only yesterday (Sat. 11 February) illustrating the life and career of the composer. Available for 28 days still on the BBC archive.

I had the LP back in the early 60s. The main theme is so sad, but perfectly in keeping with the tragedy that was the Irish rebellion. Very interesting role for James Cagney too, and I think Don Murray's first major role. Pity they don't show it more often.
