I've received this CD and would like to add to the chorus of praise for another great release by Alhambra. The music is a delight to listen to and would surely appeal to all those who like rich, symphonic music along with superbly realized ethnic cues adding to the overall exotic atmosphere of the recording. The main love theme is a another beautiful piece of music by Lavagnino, however I would have liked to have heard more of it in the score.
The wonders of resurrecting superb mostly forgotten Italian scores by one Angelo Francesco Lavagnino, by Alhambra. Long may the series continue.

It was 4 months of waiting for me to receive this CD but it was worth it!
It is difficult for me to say (considering the number of Lavagnino works), but this 'The Wonders Of Aladdin' is one of his most beautiful works. The melody of 'Princess Zaina' (later repeated in various parts like 'The Flying Carpet', 'Finale'), it is divine, wonderful! What an inspiration that master had!

The CD is in the meantime sold out at Alhambra!
SAE has also sold all of their units of this title and won´t get anymore from us in the near future.

It may be that there are still a few CD copies left at Soundtrackcorner in Germany, at Intermezzo in Italy and at Intrada, but when those have been sold, then that´s it.

Well done Stefan good to see that The Wonders of Aladdin has sold well I have been very impressed with all the Alhambra Lavagnino titles the artwork and all the information contained inside the jewel case is always of the highest quality.

One title I'd love to see on Alhambra is La Sposa Bella

La Sposa Bella already has 54 minutes of music available. But more problematic is that Stefan mentionned that they don't deal with CAM. Perhaps there's chance for a Digitmovies 2 CD set if there are enough extra takes?

I am myself curious if there are any composers than Lavagnino that Alhambra could work with, or if there are plans for more fine German soundtracks from Majewski, Wilhelm, or others.

Congratulations on what I believe is Alhambra's first Lavagnino sell-out.

While it's gratifying (to me) that a 55-year-old vintage recording can sell out within months of its issuance, most do not.

If you don't mind me asking, Stefan, could you offer some thoughts on why The Wonders of Aladdin performed better than any other of Alhambra's previously releases on Lavagnino music.

Was it any or all of the following reason?:

  • the stereo sound
  • Mario Bava's cult figure status
  • the front cover is in English and not in Italian
  • the 'baby boomer' generation's fond memories surrounding this picture
  • Lavagnino's music is a bit lighter here than on other soundtracks by him
  • the film was distributed in English-speaking territories

I expect any combo of the above reasons might be valid, but I'm interested in Stefan's feedback.
Am I wrong with any of the above or are there additional reasons not mentioned?

It was to be expected that WONDERS OF ALADDIN would perform much better than for example MADAME SANS-GENE which sold rather poorly in comparison (despite Sophia Loren!).
The main reasons for me in this case were:
    - It is a Mario Bava movie and we all know about the cult status of the director (= "Mario Bava sells")
    - Terence Hill is another big cult factor and he is one of the supporting actors in this film.
    - The fantasy genre is much more popular and sells much better among soundtrack collectors than for example historical or romantic comedy.
    - The use of the US title on the front cover instead of the Italian one was quite certainly a plus so that also many US collectors bought this CD. And of course the film is also known in the USA which is another advantage as well as that the score is in stereo.

An additional factor maybe was that in December/January not many other CDs with older Italian scores got released which may have contributed to this success.

THE WONDERS OF ALADDIN has not been the first Lavagnino sell-out for Alhambra. We also haven´t any CD copies left of L´IMPERO DEL SOLE here in Germany even though some copies may still be around at various retailers.

I preferred Madame Sans-Gene! I can certainly highly recommend this one to those who enjoyed ALADDIN.

The wonders of Aladdin is just so fun and colourful score, really glad I picked it up! Here are my detailed thoughts, a clear 5-star score for me: http://italoscores.blogspot.com/2017/04/nella-fantasia-part-2.html

I'm really looking forward to the new Lavagnino releases from Alhambra. Keep up the good work!

THE WONDERS OF ALADDIN was one of three pictures that Lux Films was going to produce starring Steve Reeves. (They had co-produced HERCULES UNCHAINED (1959)). They were able to get Reeves for the other two productions, MORGAN THE PIRATE (1960) and THE THIEF OF BAGDHAD (1961).

THE WONDERS OF ALADDIN was filmed on location in Rome and Tunisia. It was released on a pan-and-scan VHS tape by Charter Entertainment back in the early days of the format, but has never appeared on DVD. The film can be found on YouTube (albeit broken up into 10 parts).

    A question to Stefan:

Do you know if Luca Di Silverio/Digitmovies ever contacted the Lavagnino estate regarding sources on The Wonders of Aladdin for their volumes of disc from Mario Bava movies on Digitmovies?

    No, this did never happen.
Digitmovies is also much too busy currently with licensing/releasing titles from the CAM catalogue.

Kino Lorber have revealed that they are preparing a Blu-ray release of Mario Bava and Henry Levin's film The Wonders of Aladdin (1961), starring Donald O'Connor, Terence Hill, Michèle Mercier, Noëlle Adam, Vittorio De Sica, and Aldo Fabrizi. The release is expected to arrive on the market early next year.

    NEW 4K RESTORATION.
