WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23 PASSENGERS---new trailer released for the sci fi movie starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. Trailer link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h40hVlItg5k ATTRACTION---trailer released for the Russian alien invasion movie directed by Fede Bondarchuk (STALINGRAD). Trailer link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02BECwRadD8 STAR TREK: DISCOVERY---consulting producer Nicholas Meyer (STARTREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN) confirmed Michelle Yeoh (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON; TOMORROW NEVER DIES) is the first cast member of the new tv series, “I know Michelle Yeoh is in it." Yeoh might be the star of the series, a female lieutenant commander. LOST IN SPACE---Parker Posey will play Dr. Smith in the Netflix remake of the 1965 CBS sci fi series. Jonathan Harris played Dr. Smith in the original series. Toby Stephens (BLACK SAILS) and Molly Parker (HOUSE OF CARDS) also star. ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY---ROGUE ONE will be the first movie in the series without the traditional opening title crawl. Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy explained, “We felt that’s so indicative of what those saga films are. Initially, we probably will begin the film in a way that is traditional, with just the title.” HAN SOLO---Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy commented on the young Han Solo movie, " This moves closer to a heist or western type feel. We’ve talked about (Frederic) Remington and those primary colors that are used in his paintings defining the look and feel of the film.” Kennedy also commented on the future of the franchise, “I have to honestly tell you, could we [do nothing but stand-alones]? Sure. But I don’t know. We are looking at all of that…There are [possible movies] that we have been talking a lot about but we are planning to sit down in January, since we will have had The Force Awakens released, now Rogue One, and we’ve finished shooting Episode VIII. We have enough information where we can step back a little bit and say, What are we doing? What do we feel is exciting? And what are some of the things we want to explore?” HIGHLANDER---Chad Stahelski (JOHN WICK) will direct the remake of the movie that starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. GOTHAM---James Remar (DEXTER) has joined the cast as Jim Gordon's uncle, "Frank Gordon: Jim’s uncle, Frank Gordon, is a master at playing both sides and a man who knows how to keep a secret. Frank abandoned the family after Jim’s father’s fatal car crash and now, twenty-five years later, he’s returned to reconnect with his estranged nephew. But Frank harbors a dark secret, one that will upset the very foundations of Jim’s world and force him into a terrible choice between saving his family and saving his city." SALAMANDER---ABC remake of the Belgian tv series is underway. The remake is about a brilliant engineer who recruits a skeptical female FBI agent to help him investigate a bank robbery in which 66 safety deposit boxes belonging to the rich and powerful were broken into. Their investigation leads to blackmail and a vast conspiracy. DICK CHENEY---Adam McKay (ANCHORMAN) is developing a Dick Cheney biomovie for Paramount Pictures, “I’ve always found Cheney fascinating. Questions of what drove him, what his beliefs were; but once we started digging I was astounded at how much he had shaped modern America’s place in the world and how shocking the methods were by which he gained his power.”

It seems odd not to have the opening title crawl when the film leads directly into Star Wars: A New Hope. Michelle Yeoh is ace and I'm sure she'll be great in a Star Trek.

OF course LiS can be updated. It's got a great premise: a family lost in space. I think a Bruce Timm approach would work. Timm used and mixed ideas from various incarnations of Batman and devloped entirely new ideas (like Mr. Freeze's background story, and the addition of the new character Harley Quinn, amongst others). Just be respectful enough of the original series, don't make a character the opposite sex of the original just 'cause you can, aim for quality, pretend the 1998 film didn't happen, and under no circumstances is the husband to call his fie, "wife" like in the 1998 movie. All that's left at that point is to make sure Michael Bay and the Fast and Furious people don't get ahold of it.

Just be respectful enough of the original series, don't make a character the opposite sex of the original just 'cause you can, There's nothing to suggest that was their intention. I think it's an excellent twist on things; a female antagonist can "play on other strings" than a male one. The original series was a massive cheesefest (and the 90s film was also rather hokey, despite some qualities), so this most DEFINITELY can do with a remake. The premise is actually quite interesting and "serious", it was the execution of it that was camp. ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY---ROGUE ONE will be the first movie in the series without the traditional opening title crawl. Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy explained, “We felt that’s so indicative of what those saga films are. Initially, we probably will begin the film in a way that is traditional, with just the title.” Fine by me. I'm not a 'purist' as so many others. In fact, the more stylistic changes that are done, the more interesting the 'interpretation' becomes (while obviously respecting the existing mythology).

What is LIS? It's Swiss Family Robinson in space. I think the premise is pretty dated. Now what is LIS for those that grew up on it? It's the original art design, the Jupiter 2, the Robot, the music. Take that all away and it's LIS in name only. Case in point by turning Doctor Smith female. You might as well make your own movie and call it something else. Because it's not LIS. I don't take that 'purist' approach to it. The idea of a family spaceship lost in space is a neat idea in and of itself, and could be explored in many interesting, mature directions. What you miss is the execution of that concept, for which you obviously have a nostalgic connection, but such a bizarre, campy affair would not go over well with contemporary audiences (nor old geezers like me, for that matter). They tried that with the '98 film version. It didn't work.
