ROYAL ALBERT HALL SUNDAY 18th JUNE 2017 6PM! In the history of film music, Elmer Bernstein is among the iconic and the legendary. To mark what would have been his 95th birthday, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra present the European premiere of a very special concert celebrating Elmer’s life through stories and music, narrated and conducted by his son, Peter Bernstein. Elmer Bernstein’s career spanned an unparalleled five decades, during which he composed more than 150 original movie scores, nearly 80 for television, and numerous other side-projects and diversions. He created some of the most recognisable and memorable themes in Hollywood history, including The Man With the Golden Arm, The Magnificent Seven, and The Great Escape, and picked up numerous awards including an Academy Award for Thoroughly Modern Millie in 1968. This performance will feature special guest appearances, including John Landis, who directed several Bernstein-scored films. ‘It’s one thing to write music that reinforces a film, underscores it…It’s entirely another thing to write music that graces a film. That’s what Elmer Bernstein does.’Martin Scorsese Details: http://www.royalalberthall.com/tickets/events/2017/elmer-bernstein-50-years-of-film-music/?utm_source=wordfly&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2016e-news17november&utm_content=version_A&emailsource=25841

Amazed that this posting got zero response from members of the board. Where are all the UK film music fans? No interest in attending what promises to be a terrific film music event paying tribute to one of the masters of the medium? Ah, well. I ordered my tickets a fortnight ago! JMM.

Bump. A good friend of mine mentioned to me that tickets for this concert are going fast. I hope it's true!

We're looking forward so much to the Dublin Concert conducted by Peter. I know it's going to be great having previously attended the wonderful concert he gave in Cordoba, Andalusia, Spain, some years ago. A most memorable night indeed which took place open air in the Roman Amphitheatre. We are so lucky to have Peter doing these concerts, a lovely gentleman and a great musician and composer, just like his beloved father. This is a night not to be missed.

On today's "The Film Programme" on BBC Radio 4, mention of the up-coming concert was made, and John Landis was interviewed by telephone from L.A. Mr Landis (despite sounding a bit throaty at times) spoke enthusiastically about his old collaborator Bernstein. The programme episode can be downloaded via this link (I suspect for a limited period of time) and the Landis section comes in roughly ten minutes before the end... www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08rt9ry

I feel fortunate to have attended this superb concert of film music a couple of nights ago. It was great. To begin with, this was the playlist - National Geographic Theme The Ten Commandments Suite Hawaii Overture (wrongly referred to as the "main titles" in the programme) Hollywood and the Stars Theme The Man With the Golden Arm To Kill a Mockingbird Suite The Magnificent Seven Suite (with an altered, and more proper, introduction, as per the film itself) INTERVAL Walk on the Wild Side From the Terrace Suite Three Amigos Main Title The Age of Innocence An American Werewolf in London Suite The Great Escape Suite. Then, encore - Sweet Smell of Success. Well, what a line-up! And the cast - Peter Bernstein proved himself to be a most able conductor. And part-host! The other hosting was carried out in enthusiastic ( and occasionally humorous) style by John Landis. How heartening to witness this duo maintain and (hopefully) extend the legacy of a great Hollywood figure, Elmer Bernstein. I'm pleased to say that the concert in the vast Royal Albert Hall appeared to be well-attended. But I have to say that I would have expected a wee bit more enthusiasm and feedback for such an event from the UK-based members of this board! None seems forthcoming, and I sense that it is indicative of the way film music is going. JMM.

Peter Bernstein has provided photographs and video footage of some of the highlights of the London concert in the Gallery of his web-site. Terrific stuff - have a look here : https://www.petermbernstein.com/gallery

THAT is the best rendition of WALK ON THE WILD SIDE I ever heard in concert! Henry, I wish you could have been over to witness the whole thing. Actually, the encore, which was SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS, was the most impressive I've ever heard IT in concert!
