DICK TRACY
Composed by DANNY ELFMAN
INTRADA Special Collection 363

For the 1990 Walt Disney feature Dick Tracy, composer Danny Elfman brought forth his rambunctious, bristling action music style, yet treating Dick Tracy with more romanticism —all while leaving room for numerous musical numbers and montages set to Stephen Sondheim songs (songs sold separately). In contrast to the brooding, looming Gothic theme for the prior year's Batman, Elfman wrote a no-nonsense, bustling march for Dick Tracy, bereft of sentimentality, which Elfman describes as a “crimestopper” melody that bursts forth in halting statements in the film’s main title and accompanies Tracy’s action throughout the film. The score features a surging, romantic theme for Tracy’s love, as well as nods to George Gershwin.

For his original 1990 soundtrack album, Elfman assembled 35 minutes of highlights, offering a carefully edited, musically rewarding experience. The fragmentary nature of the many short cues and the rapid pace at which they play under their respective scenes made the above presentation both practical and exciting. For this new 2-CD release, Intrada presents his original 1990 album intact as the first part of our program. To get a closer look into Danny Elfman’s music for Dick Tracy, Intrada was provided access to the complete original scoring session elements, recorded onto Mitsubishi 880 format 32-track digital tape, preserved in the Disney vaults in pristine condition. We commissioned Dennis Sands, the veteran engineer who helmed those original scoring sessions, to completely remix the entire score, allowing us the opportunity to add more than an hour of previously unreleased music, including unedited versions of the 1990 album selections plus a wealth of additional film cues, alternates and revisions, all appearing in crisp, state-of-the- art sound.

Fabulous looking release!! :-) :-)

An often overlooked Elfman gem.

Small note to new Intrada designer - don't forget to include that little (in this case red) line next to the catalogue number on both spines, second time it's been missed (Cheyenne Autumn missed it too)

Yessss!!!!! Ordered mine about 15 minutes ago!!! This has been one of my grails ever since I got the original score in 1990 and realized it was incomplete when I re-watched it on VHS in 1991! This is going to be a real treat to listen to.

Thank you so much Intrada!!!

I'm assuming someone will come up with a playlist for the film versions.

I'm totally fine with a "kitchen sink" edition!

Original program = listening experience

Back to Back revisions = great way to see what changed. I'm looking forward to not having to search all over 2 CD's to compare versions. Love this new style of presentation!

I had heard that the sessions were a total mess for the picture due to all the recutting and rescoring that Warren Beatty wanted back in the day. Elfman himself seemed to say as much.

A friend of mine got ahold of a couple of DATs worth of session cues from DICK TRACY a few years back. He tried to organize the cues into some kind of order, but ultimately had to give up because there were so many alts and revisions (some of which didn't even resemble eachother at all) that it proved to be an impossible mission.

That said, if any label was ever going try put an expanded DICK out, I'm glad that it was done the way Intrada has apparently done it. I think it's ridiculous to sandwich a bunch of cues that don't belong together into one big track for the sake of having a smaller number of tracks on the CD. Tracks like that don't reflect what's in the film (or even what the composer intended to be in the film), and they don't allow one to appreciate what the cue is on its own.

Anyway, bravo to Intrada not only for expanding a score I really love, but also for doing it the right way.

So the three Sondheim songs are not included. Must have been a question of licensing. Too bad, because they're pretty good, and one of them, "Sooner or Later," won an Oscar. What I believe are soundtrack recordings of them were released on a Madonna CD at the time, called "I'm Breathless," which may still be available. One songs a wistful duet with Broadway performer Mandy Patinkin, who had a small, kind of throwaway part, and who is referred to in the song credits as "male voice."

Nice. Classic Danny.
This movie gets a bum rap I think. Haven't seen it since it's theatrical release, wonder how it ages.

OMFG is quite right.

This is LONG overdue. So much music to love with this, especially that love theme.

Wonderful Elfman. I will be listening to this many, many times.

An excellent, welcome, needed, and truly exciting release. One of Danny Elfman's very, very best scores, for IMO one of the very, very best films he has scored to date. I look immensely forward to hearing this new release. Bravo Intrada!

I agree. I much prefer the film arrangement of What Can You Lose to the one on the Madonna album which didn't have the same orchestr presence and that beautiful ascending horn line. But I understand why Intrada couldn't include them. Maybe someday those film versions of the Sondheim songs will be released. In the meantime, thank you Intrada for this comprehensive release of Elfman's score. smile

If I understand correctly, I also can buy "additional" albums for original songs?

So... Can anyone help me with them? I examined amazon & wiki and found that:
"Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man),"
"More,"
"Back in Business,"
"What Can You Lose?"
are on Madonna's I'm Breathless album,
and
"Live Alone and Like It" is on Mel Torme - At The Movies album.

But as I understand "Back in Business," was performed by Janis Siegel, Cheryl Bentyne, and Lorraine Feather. So probably this version is not on Madonna's CD. Anyone know - was it ever released?

Thanks

I am rather curious who came up with the idea splitting the complete score over two CDs while it can so easily fit on one!
