CUTTER'S WAY
Music Composed by Jack Nitzsche
Mixed and Mastered by Mike Matessino
Liner notes by Daniel Schweiger
Limited edition of 1000 units

Quartet Records and MGM present the world premiere release of the masterful score by Jack Nitzsche (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Starman, Hardcore, The Indian Runner) for the cult classic Cutter’s Way, directed by Ivan Passer in 1981 and starring Jeff Bridges, John Heard and Lisa Eichhorn.

One rainy night, Richard Bone's (Bridges) car breaks down in an alleyway. He spots a large, mysterious car in the distance. A man dumps something into a garbage can. At first, Bone thinks nothing of it and proceeds to meet his friend, Alex Cutter (Heard). The next day, a young girl is found brutally murdered in the same alleyway where Bone had abandoned his car. He becomes a suspect. When Bone spots the man he thinks is the murderer in a parade later that day—local tycoon J.J. Cord (Stephen Elliott)—Cutter begins to take an interest in the mystery that unfolds. His interest soon becomes a conspiracy theory that develops into a troublesome investigation with his skeptical friend and the dead girl's sister (Ann Dusenberry) along for the ride.

Jack Nitzsche was a unique, personal voice in the films of ’70s and ’80s. Visionary, excellent producer, pioneer of electronics... His not-too-prolific but brilliant soundtrack career still stands as one of the coolest. For Cutter’s Way, Nitzsche created a sound structure with unusual instruments (glass harmonica, zither, electric strings) to show the world of cynicism, crime and political privilege, as well as the atmosphere of nostalgia that abounds in the film. Because the film is set on the Mexican border, Nitzsche also adapted and recorded several cues in mariachi style; Mexican flavor can, in fact, be heard throughout the score.

Mixed and mastered by Mike Matessino from the original 24-track sessions, we’re glad to present all that Jack Nitzsche recorded for the film, including the source music and some demos. The package includes a 20-page full-color booklet with in-depth liner notes by Daniel Schweiger.

THE LAST VALLEY
Music Composed and Conducted by John Barry
Restored and Mastered by Chris Malone
Liner notes by John Takis

Quartet Records and Universal Music Group present the long-awaited remastered reissue of John Barry’s absolute classic.

The Last Valley is a historical drama set during the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648). It was directed by James Clavell in 1971. A mercenary soldier (Michael Caine) and a teacher (Omar Sharif), each fleeing the religious war in southern Germany, accidentally find the valley, untouched by the war, and live there in peace.

Following his historical success with The Lion in Winter in 1968, John Barry was a natural choice for this film. Followed the same year by Mary, Queen of Scots, and by Robin and Marian in 1976, the four films form an essential historical tetralogy in Barry’s career. In The Last Valley, the composer provides a score of thunderous orchestral power, aggressive action cues and haunting choral writing. The score remains one of the most valued and appreciated by his fans.

The album was originally released in 1972 by Dunhill Records, where the composer and record producer Phil Ramone reordered the material for a better listening experience, and incorporated music not heard in the final cut of the picture. That album was reissued on CD in 2007 by Intrada. (James Fitzpatrick produced an excellent recording of the complete score conducted by Nic Raine for Silva Screen in 2001.) For this new edition of the original LP tracks (the complete recording session recorded by John Richards at CTS sadly remains lost or destroyed.) Chris Malone has gone back to the original 2-track stereo tapes, courtesy of UMG, and remastered the album with a much improved and open sound, ensuring a more natural treble and a better low-end extension. The result is a new sound experience—the original score has never sounded so good. The CD is accompanied by a 16-page full-color booklet with detailed liner notes by John Takis.

SANTA CLAUS THE MOVIE (REISSUE)
Music Composed and Conducted by Henry Mancini
Mastered by José Vinader
Liner notes by Jeff Bond
Last pressing limited to 500 units

Back in stock! Last pressing of 500 units for Henry Mancini’s complete and marvelous score for this 1985 Christmas movie.

The film, directed by Jeannot Szwarc, starred Dudley Moore, David Huddleston and John Lithgow. An ambitious and expensive project produced by Alexander Salkind, it was not the box-office hit it was expected to be.

One of the most important aspects of the film was its soundtrack, for which Salkind hired the great Henry Mancini. The composer was deeply involved in the production, composing more than 85 minutes of original music for the 109-minute film. This soundtrack is surely one of the biggest efforts of his career, written during the same period as Lifeforce and The Great Mouse Detective.
Mancini’ score is so beautiful, diverse and emotional, it is not strange that it has become the film’s most remembered and appreciated feature. Recorded at CTS Studios in London with The London Metropolitan Orchestra, the score also features The Ambrosian Children’s Choir performing several charming songs written by Mancini and Leslie Bricusse.

For the original album, released in 1985 by EMI America, Mancini prepared a program of highlights: 13 tracks lasting only 37 minutes (from an 85-minute score!). Some themes were modified for their album version—with different durations, slightly different mixes or the addition of pop elements. Almost all of Mancini’s symphonic effort was missing.

After a long search for all the source material and an effort to bring together the different rights owners (the film was a complicated coproduction), we can now present Mancini’s masterful score in its entirety, remixed from ½? 3-track stereo and 2? 24-track session masters vaulted in mint condition at Abbey Road Studios, London (where the EMI album was mixed). In addition to the complete score, it has been great to discover a lot of extra material that Mancini recorded for the film: songs with alternate lyrics, different orchestrations, etc. Courtesy of Capitol Records, we have also included the original 1985 album version, mastered from first-generation master tapes stored in the Abbey Road vaults.

This deluxe, 3-CD release includes a 32-page full-color booklet with liner notes and track-by-track analysis by Jeff Bond.

The three titles are now in pre-order, we expect to receive them at the end of next week.

Wow! I just compared the samples of The Last Valley with the Intrada and there indeed is a much improved sound! It makes you wonder why Intrada didn't get a better result in the first place. Perhaps they used a different source? A must buy for me.

Yup, I'll be buying The Last Valley, I was listening to the Intrada only last night, & it does sound a bit fragile at times, the clips sound great. I remember this didn't sell out until Intrada said they were deleting it, & then it went in a couple of days. Mary Queen Of Scots sold out a lot faster, & that Intrada CD sound fantastic. The soundtrack is a classic, just listen to the samples.

Back in the early days of our UMG relationship they would deliver a finished master so we weren't involved. I look forward to hearing this new version!

The sound quality of 'The Last Valley' is absolutely astounding !

Ditto for 'Cutter's Way' (very 'Cuckoo's Nest')

Thank you Quartet.

I nearly posted that, I was sure I could remember reading that UMG did the mastering themselves. I was so happy when Intrada released it, & it's given me several years of pleasure, but I'm always happy to re-buy a favourite soundtrack CD with improved sound, just like I did with Rio Conchos & The Egyptian & a few others.

I already have the original triple disc SANTA CLAUS release and I'm more than satisfied with the fantastic (expanded) Silva re-recording of THE LAST VALLEY on CD, which leaves CUTTER and I'm always interested to hear what Jack Nitzsche was up to.
I vaguely remember an off-beat, insistent/catchy main theme when I watched the film years and years ago (a horse smashing through a glass window?), but not much else.
I look forward to playing the samples and seeing where they take me.

I've had the same problem more than once. Luckily the online retailer from whom I bought TOTAL RECALL was able to get a replacement disc from Quartet after several very polite e-mails from me went unanswered for many weeks. Not cool, Quartet.

Finally, it seems like I'm not alone! I wrote them an email, I believe it was about 40-50 days ago, and they ignored me completely, they never answered me. The defective CD is: THE LIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD (Piero Piccioni) ...
If in some cases they can not replace a defective CD, they could at least give me a justification, an answer, and what I got was absolutely nothing, NO ANSWER!
A bad professionalism with clients, Quartet! frown

I wrote them too once, not about faulty discs but other matters, and they never ever answered me.
Great label, classy releases galore, but very loose idea of customer support.

If you are Carlos Fiorelli, I just saw Luis Garcia, who is in charge of orders maintenance, replied you on 29/09 explaining that album was out of print and we had no replacement at the moment. He suggested you to contact directly Ark Square to try to solve the problem, and we will arrange it directly with the retailer. We can not send a replacement from Spain to Brazil for a sold out album (that we don't have in the warehouse) bought in Japan. We don't have stock, sorry so much. But please, write to Ark and sure we can find any solution to your problem.

Jose

I regret that a few people are unhappy (I really hope there's only a few), because we really try to be very friendly to everyone. Many customers around can confirm that we always answer and solve their problems in a very nice form, and, if proceed, we always send replacements, or reprinted faulty discs, booklets, etc.

Anyway, there are people who write to the info page and they don't put their email address or contact (we are not seers, for the moment), or, due to any reason of incompatibility of servers, their emails end up in the spam box.

I previously wrote here that if anyone does not receive a answer in the next 2-3 days after send the request, you can write directly to me:

jose@quartetrecords.com

quartetrecords@gmail.com

If you are not answered it is for any reason that we have not controlled, not because we ignore you. Customers are the only reason for the existence of a label.

Thank you,
Jose

Yes, you really know my case/problem, thank you! In fact, I thought you had not received my email because I think that I did not receive any response ... but now, I'm thinkin' that maybe the response go straight into my spam box ...
Anyway, thank you very much Jose for your response now and the other email alternatives.

After posting this Quartet sent an answer saying that they needed to re-press the title in question but now they have it back in stock and will send replacement soon.
Guess what ... it did NOT arrived weeks later again and another email inbetween was not answered too as well !!
That's really very bad customer service.
