THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27 STAR TREK: DISCOVERY---Bryan Fuller has left the showrunner position after "strains" with CBS, but he will continue as executive producer. He will be replaced by co-producers Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg. Akive Goldsman has joined the series in a "top creative role". Sources said most of the roles have been filled, but the lead role of a female lieutenant commander has been difficult to cast. STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII---a source said EPISODE VIII will feature a Stormtrooper known as "The Executioner" who is similar to Stormtrooper FN-2199 (TR-8R) who battled Finn in THE FORCE AWAKENS. He will have a half matte black helmet and a weapon with three spinning blades like "something out of Phantasm". GOD PARTICLE---the sci fi movie is part of the Cloverfield Universe which includes CLOVERFIELD and 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE. The plot involves astronauts on a space station discover Earth has disappeared after a scientific experiment goes awry and a mysterious space shuttle appears nearby. Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki and Gugu Mbatha-Raw star. Sources claim JJ Abrams and Paramount Pictures will release a new movie in the Cloverfield Universe every year. THE WALKING DEAD---Steven Yuen defended Glenn's death after intense fan protests, "Robert [Kirkman] wrote such a messed up but at the same time incredible way to take something away. To make a story as impactful as it is. When you read the comic, you kind of don’t want that moment to go to anyone else. I think I said that, ‘Don’t let that go to anyone else.‘ To do it the way we did it, I think, was brave and super affecting.” UNEARTHED---Doug Liman (EDGE OF TOMORROW) is in talks to direct this sci fi movie based on the novel about tomb-raiders on a distant planet who discover a long-dead civilization which could cause the end of mankind. ANGEL HAS FALLEN---Gerard Butler returns as Secret Service Agent Mike Banning for the second sequel to OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN. The plot has Banning as the target, “if his attackers can take down half of Washington D.C. with it, all the better. Among those at risk include the President, whose official Air Force One plane is code-named Angel.” AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR---Benedict Cumberbatch commented on Doctor Strange's role in the sequel, I think [Doctor Strange] has to be Team Doctor Strange. His job title is defender of the fabric of reality. I mean, he fights other dimensional threats that are beyond the perceptions of that very potent squabble [between Cap and Iron Man], and I’d like to think he’s going to help them both, rather than take sides.” TRON 3---director James Gunn denied rumors he's directing a new sequel, “The other day I posted a photo of myself and my friend Jimmy Urine posing with the TRON cycle in our Guardians of the Galaxy boardroom. Increasingly over the past few days I have been getting more and more messages and tweets asking if I am involved in a TRON sequel, which exploded today after a few articles like the one below (which claims I talked about having once been involved with a TRON sequel on a FB live session… which never was, and never happened). No, I am not doing a TRON movie. I was simply taking a photo with a cool prop. We also have a Rocketeer mask displayed in our offices; I am not doing a Rocketeer movie either. I once rode Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, and I am not doing a Cars sequel. And, so I don’t fail to mention it, in 2007 I attended a party where Pauly Shore was, and am also not attached to Encino Man 2. Have a wonderful evening, all.” BRAVEHEART---Mel Gibson said the original cut was three hours and 45 minutes long. He has one hour of unseen film footage which he might release in a special edition if a studio is interested in financing it, “People have mentioned it. It’s a big deal". CORMORAN STRIKE---HBO has acquired the rights to the BBC One miniseries based on the JK Rowling novels. Tom Burke (WAR AND PEACE) stars. The first miniseries, CUCKOO'S CALLING, is three hours. THE SILKWORM and CAREER OF EVIL are both two hours. SEARCHERS---new CW series about an estranged brother and sister who team up ten years after the death of their parents to discover their mother's stories lead to mysteries and legends of the world. Jason Rothenberg (THE 100) is the writer/showrunner. Greg Berlanti (THE FLASH, SUPERGIRL, ARROW) is the producer. BLOODRUNNERS---horror movie set during Prohibition when a crooked cop attempts to shake down a new speakeasy and discovers it's a haven for vampires. Ice-T and Michael McFadden star.

About time those stormtroopers actually amounted to something. The original trilogy always made me question the stormtrooper training. Sounds like a cool concept, although very grim (the Earth disappearing!?). I think I said that, ‘Don’t let that go to anyone else.‘ To do it the way we did it, I think, was brave and super affecting.” Of course, he would defend it out of solidarity. That doesn't make it any less of sloppy writing, however. There's a deep discrepancy between the way the character was set up and developped early on, and then the decision to whack him off. I suspect it could be a discrapency caused by the adaptation to TV rather than in Kirkman's graphic novel.
