As long as these are from the actual album masters I will be VERY happy - finally Mirage, and John and Mary is swell - but they're all swell, but I want to hear definitively what the sources are. For an obvious example, we know Doug at Intrada seems to be doing the AVA and Mainstream titles and Walk Don't Run is one of those - so is that master being used?

It’s hard to believe that they’ve pulled together albums from so many disparate labels (although now they are all controlled by only three outfits):

THE PAWNBROKER – Verve (UMG)
THE SLENDER THREAD – Mercury (UMG) [new to CD]
MIRAGE – Mercury (UMG) [new to CD]
THE DEADLY AFFAIR – Verve (UMG)
IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT – United Artists (MGM)
IN COLD BLOOD – Colgems (Sony) [new to CD]
WALK, DON’T RUN – Mainstream (Sony)
THE ITALIAN JOB – Paramount (UMG)
THE LOST MAN – Universal City (UMG) [new to CD]
JOHN AND MARY – A&M (UMG) [new to CD]

Even if they are just good masters from LPs, it's a good deal for just $29 (plus shipping) for the five new releases (assuming they are all in stereo).

Mirage has just been released independently by Verve (wish I didn't buy that -- almost the same price as that box!), but yeah, very nice to have some of my favourite soundtracks LP on CD.

So the only missing LPs now are 1969 Cactus Flower and 1969 Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice?

Didn't know about the MIRAGE release. I see it's available as a download. Is it also on CD?

THE HOT ROCK (on the little known Prophesy label) is still out there. Also FOR LOVE OF IVY (ABC) and MACKENNA'S GOLD (RCA).

Well, I bought High-Res FLAC. I'm not sure if there was a CD release (?)

The Hot Rock is essential! Always been my fave Q score. A definite classic funk LP.

Haineshisway, I think there is no reason to worry about the sources used for this box. I indeed remember of Stéphane Lerouge being involved in this project together with Quincy Jones himself for at least two years. Licensing these titles has therefore been a long process from the department in charge of rights at Universal.

Now I wonder if the 6th CD will be a compilation of other soundtracks. I guess some cover versions might also have been included.

The first paragraph of the publicity blurb basically says that

"For the first time, here are the great film scores of Quincy Jones, remastered and uncut. It took a long time to find and restore the master tapes relevant to the part of his life entirely dedicated to writing for films."

It goes on . . .

"I wanted to write music for films since the age of fourteen years," says Quincy. This dream became reality eighteen years later in 1965 with "The Pawnbroker" by Sidney Lumet. "

The films of Quincy Jones encompass seven years of great intensity, an enchanted period (1965-1972) extended by "The Wiz," a movie with Michael Jackson, and especially "The Color Purple" by Steven Spielberg.

The theater stage will be decisive in the recognition of his talent, which up until then was highlighted by a virtuoso reputation as an arranger. But it is Hollywood that will install and confirm Quincy Jones as a composer.

For Quincy Jones, writing for the cinema is also a synthesis of its different cultures: bebop, soul, rhythm and blues, serialism, bossa nova.

Objectively, the cinematic territory of Quincy Jones is much larger than we imagine in theory. In its way, this lush anthology seeks to map it out.

These French UMG sets are great bargains. I just wish the "Cactus Flower" had been included. Maybe sooner or later..

Are you suggesting that some of these masters may have been lost in the Universal fire?

Exciting release. One of the best of the year imo.

MacKenna's Gold has probably turned to dust, likewise A Dandy In Aspic but that shouldn't detract from just how good this set is.

The original MACKENNA'S GOLD tracks at Columbia Pictures are probably long gone, but nothing in this set is coming from original film tracks. There's no reason to believe that RCA/Sony has lost the album master for that film score. It looks like the producers of this set have limited themselves to just a few albums from the Sony catalog, going with the sole dramatic outing--IN COLD BLOOD-- and one of the comedies--WALK, DON'T RUN--and eschewing the other lighter fare (CACTUS FLOWER, BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE) as well as the western. This set is weighted towards Jones' darker scores. They even skipped the romantic comedy FOR LOVE OF IVY, which UMG should have. A DANDY IN ASPIC never had an LP release.

Hopefully these other LPs will be released soon as well. Maybe Kritzerland have some interest? Two LPs on 1 CD?

Based on their previous Legrand, Jarre and Delerue sets this is an instant buy.

Based on their previous Legrand, Jarre and Delerue sets this is an instant buy.

But see, bargain or not, this is my problem - most of the Legrand stuff came right from Legrand and certainly the Jarre came from Jarre and we know much of the Delerue came from the widow. So, for me, not always optimal sources.
