There's been a whole bunch of little westerns lately.

This year Hell or High Water's been highly acclaimed, and we've also seen In a Valley of Violence, for which I've seen mixed reviews. In the last year or so there's been Bone Tomahawk, Jane Got a Gun, The Duel, Forsaken. A couple years ago we had The Homesman. And of course the offbeat Aussie The Dressmaker had a spaghetti western vibe.

Which of the recent glut of westerns are the real deal? Which are overhyped? Which have you enjoyed? Which are worth checking out?

HELL OR HIGH WATER was excellent, as was THE HOMESMAN. I hated BONE TOMAHAWK, but only after it turned into a ridiculous horror movie (very ill-conceived movie), and JANE GOT HER GUN was half-baked and boring. The remake of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN did nothing for me, and it seems few others as it has already faded away.

A couple nights ago I watched IN A VALLEY OF VIOLENCE, which is done in the faux spaghetti western style of HANG 'EM HIGH and I thought okay but a little too thin story-wise.

I suggest you read the long topic on the other side of the board about The Magnificent Seven. Yes, Rory didn't like it; however, all the rest of us who posted on that topic were very happy with the film. We were all rather surprised at how much we liked it. It continues to play in my town and in larger cities.

Jane Got Her Gun was just okay. Forsaken got good reviews but was very, very slow and rather boring with very little action even at the end. Bone Tomahawk was very interesting but became rather gruesome towards the end. One that I thought was interesting was The Salvation which starred Mads Mikkelsen, and it was directed by a Danish director. While it was suppose to be taking place in America, it was actually filmed in South Africa. Unique landscapes.

The Homesman is very different and just plain strange. We did a thread on it at FSM. It does take some tolerance for some rather absurd happenings, and it definitely takes some interpretive skills.

Slow West was a pretty nice little Western with Michael Fassbender. Didn't like Bone Tomohawk, it wasted a good cast. Hell or High Water was good, if straightforward, good acting and camerawork.

Yes, I forgot SLOW WEST. It was good but was easy to forget because it was so simple a tale. I'm glad they're still making westerns, but they're no making high budget westerns. Oh, wait, I forgot, they spent $90 Mill on the remake of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. I should have said they don't make "great" westerns. The remake of TMS was a cartoon western. I only wish someone would make a great western again.

I'm a fan of Open Range but I suppose that is actually an older film now. I hope someone makes a great western, too. I'd also like to see topics I've not seen covered in previous films (that I've noticed) like black cowboys or the Chinese, but true to the time not turned into a Kung fu film or modern gangsta film in disguise.

An authentic western that showed how it really was instead of the popular myths? Pretty tall order there, pilgrim.

Although there haven't been many good westerns (or, in fact, westerns at all) in the post-UNFORGIVEN years, there have been some. SLOW WEST was excellent. Have you guys seen MEEK'S CUTOFF?

Other recent, decent examples include DJANGO UNCHAINED, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD, 3:10 TO YUMA, THE MISSING and THE PROPOSITION.

No mention of Cowboys vs Aliens? What's wrong with you people?

Middle-of-the-road affair, overall, but actually with some good elements, I thought.

And A Million Ways to Die in the West - I got more laughs from that than The Searchers, Shane and High Noon put together.

I like THE QUICK AND THE DEAD (1995). Great film, great music.

Within the last few years Costner had mentioned plans to do three more low budget westerns in the vein of Open Range, but I've never seen anything afterwards about the plan moving forward.

That's a shame, because for me Open Range is a wonderful movie and can stand along with other western classics.

And where the heck is a US Blu Ray of this?

Blimey, how could i have forgotten all those. I didn't see The Missing though or even hear of Meek's Cutoff. Any good? I liked the others you mention well enough to varying degrees.

There was one called Appalloosa (sp) too, which was a bit too dull for me but had Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen in it.

Yah, i'll stick to documentaries when they pop up for that type of stuff.

Yeah, MEEK'S CUTOFF is pretty good. It's an "alternative" western with little in the way of music and stereotypes, but that's one of the reasons I like it.
