Just seen the opening episode of Walking Dead S7, I didn't so much enjoy it, as survived it. I love the show, but it can be a bit of a downer sometimes, I wouldn't watch an episode if I was a bit low. The thing is, the baddies aren't the zombies (sorry, walkers), yes they'll kill you, eat the face off you while you're still alive, but there's no malice there. It's the other survivors that do real bad things (including at times Rick's mob). It is a great show, but in many ways the first series was the best, the narrative really does move forward, & it doesn't get bogged down, like at the farm or in the prison, & there's some great sequences, & you can watch it as a stand alone show.

Mike J is correct, the Darabont screenplay was far better, that lack of Lucas involvement is a really good thing. But there is nothing sure about David Koepp, he has been involved in some pretty good stuff, and other far less impressive, like Inferno out now. George Lucas created the character in the first place, and supplied story ideas for not just Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but all three of the other movies as well as The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, whereas David Koepp's involvement with the franchise up to now has been confined to solely the fourth film. While I'm admittedly much more forgiving of the fourth movie than many others, I certainly recognize it's the weakest in the series, but I think that's more the fault of Koepp's final script than Lucas's story elements (which were present in the Darabont draft as well). I'd much rather have Lucas involved with the writing of the fifth movie than Koepp (and not just because I think it could make for a better movie, but also because I view the series as Lucas's creation, and would like to retain more of his authorial stamp on them all, for better or worse). I'm just glad Lucas is still involved as executive producer, and that it's happening at all.

Whoa... loads of negativity here! Unlike most everyone else, I don't really have an issue with the gore in the DEAD premiere. It's a very visceral show, so it belongs to the universe. I have more issues with the one main character they killed off, because it seemed like sloppy writing. The only death I had a problem with was Beth's. That was "sloppy writing", IMO. As for "torture porn", what happened was what I was expecting. As far as the first victim went. They try to shock people, and, since everyone knew there was going to be one death (and I thought it was obvious who it was going to be), they went for two. Anyway, people die in this show. I'm a fan and will keep watching. My Walking Dead posts (in the very unlikely event anyone is interested). http://perquinn.blogspot.com/search/label/TWD

My Walking Dead posts (in the very unlikely event anyone is interested). http://perquinn.blogspot.com/search/label/TWD There's a nice article from the LA Times online edition ( sorry, I don't have the link ) which refers to it as "misery porn" which is right on target. Some of the advertising promoting the season show the Negan character with tag lines like " We're just getting started" or "You ain't seen nothing yet", so it's going to get even worse? Yeah the show is very visceral, but this episode was needlessly grotesque. Greg Nicotero has addressed the backlash over the violence with some sketchy comments, one even saying Glenn's death "wasn't even about Glenn" since it was all about breaking Rick. Hmmm. Ok. Nice. Nice way to marginalize a major character's death, to even say his final scene isn't even about him. That's one of the huge problems with how the episode was written/directed. It's true, really, the poor guy was a throwaway in his last scene after 6 years. And sloppy / bad writing? Look over there at Eugene and his whole "I iz a brilliant scientist and must get to Washington" storyline. That was beyond awful.
