I know that the Legend cd came out years ago, I bought one, but, according to Amazon this is a new release which is coming out on Oct 28th. I was just curious as to whether it was a straight re-issue of the Legend release or a remastered and possibly/hopefully expanded version.

Its probably a copy then Amazon sell CDR'S now I wouldn't bother with it till there's more News do you like CDR'S Chris. No. I wasn't happy that "The 33" was a cdr, I honestly thought it was a genuine cd release. So, no I don't like cdr's and I HATE digi paks. Give me a pressed cd in a jewel case and I am a happy man.

This looks like a rehash of the previous release. Since it was an international production, there might be a chance for one of the Italian CD companies to release an expanded version. I love WATERLOO, the movie and the score. Reportedly, the Russian release version is about 4 hrs. long, and was cut to just a little more than 2 hrs. for the European and U.S. releases. In the U.K., it was originally a roadshow, and the program still appears occasionally on eBay. Directed by Sergei Bondarchuk, whose previous, massive Russian version of WAR AND PEACE was a great success, the film of WATERLOO has the same attention to period detail, and battle reconstructions, with many scenes based on famous paintings of the event. It's the kind of film that really needs to be seen on a big screen. (WATERLOO doesn't have nearly the dramatic skill of WAR AND PEACE - what does? - but it is wonderful to watch for the sheer epic spectacle.) Nino Rota's score is masterful, but I don't recall a lot of music in the film, and most of it seems to have ended up, first on the lp, then the later CD releases. He even uses one of his WAR AND PEACE themes for one of the dances in a ball sequence in WATERLOO. (I'd also love to get an expanded release of Rota's score for the 1956 WAR AND PEACE. I wouldn't be surprised if he was chosen for WATERLOO because of his work on that.) And a 2-CD release of both expanded scores would be even better!

Since it was an international production, there might be a chance for one of the Italian CD companies to release an expanded version. Certainly not from the Italian labels as Rota's WATERLOO is owned by Radiofilmusica/De Laurentiis. At the moment and I have written this here already a lot of times, none of the Italian labels does have any good contacts with that very difficult company anymore. The only one who had a close working relationship with Radiofilmusica and its manager Giovanni Cimmino was Maurizio Buttazzoni, the owner of the Legend label. Since Buttazzoni has passed away in 2011, all contacts with Radiofilmusica have tailed off. So don't expect anything from the Italian labels regarding Radiofilmusica in the near future.

Couldn't agree more about both the score and the movie. This LP was the first full soundtrack I listened to. I must have been five or six years old and I was just blown way by it so I have a very soft spot for this score. From what I understand the longer cut of the movie was just a rough cut and when the decision was made to cut it down massively the footage was actually discarded which is terribly sad. When I rewatched the film years later it struck me that the style of the film was very Leone-esque, just a great energy to the filming and editing. I've read negative comments on Steiger's performance but you can't please everyone, I thought it was terrific and contrasted brilliantly with the ice-cold of Plummer's Wellington.
