Quartet Records is glad to present its three new releases:

LES PETROLÉUSES / DANS LE POUSSIÉRE DU SOLEIL
Music Composed by Francis Lai
Conducted by Christian Gaubert
Limited edition of 500 units

Quartet Records and FGL Productions present the premiere complete edition of two western scores by classic French composer Francis Lai (A Man and a Woman, Love Story, The Bobo, Le Baby-sitter, Bilitis), one of the greatest creators of melodies in film music history.

Les Pétroleuses (aka Frenchie King) is a curious and iconic Spanish-French coproduction directed by Christian-Jacque in 1971, in which women assumed the traditional roles of hard men in the Old West. It starred Claudia Cardinale and Brigitte Bardot as outlaw sisters who inherit a ranch and try to settle down and develop relationships with a neighboring family that includes many brothers. The film was a success, particularly because of the two actresses, and Francis Lai’s music was also very successful. The composer, an accordionist born in Nice and musical director for Edith Piaf’s last tours, emerged victorious with this western assignment. Lai provides lovely melodies, action music, three beautiful songs and lots of fun!

Dans la poussière du soleil (aka Dust in the Sun) (1973) directed by Richard Balducci and starring Maria Schell and Bob Cunningham, is an unknown and unusual spaghetti western based on William Shakespeare’s Hamlet(!). Francis Lai’s score, dark yet always tuneful and melodious, features a remarkable main theme.

The soundtrack album of Les pétroleuses was released on LP concurrently with the film and reissued on CD only in Japan in 1995, making it now a very hard-to-find collector’s item. For this new release, conceived by Stéphane Lerouge and supervised by the composer, we offer the newly mastered album sourced from first-generation master tapes, and have also included six bonus tracks. Dans la poussière du soleil was only released in digital format some years ago, so this is the premiere physical edition in any form.

REUNION /L'AMI RETROUVÉ) / MISUNDERSTOOD
Music Composed by Philippe Sarde
Limited edition of 500 units

World premiere release of two collaborations between legendary French maestro Philippe Sarde (Les choses de la vie, The Tenant, Joshua Then and Now, Quai d’Orsay) and cult director Jerry Schatzberg (The Panic in Needle Park, The Scarecrow)

Composer and director collaborated for the first time in 1984 on the film Misunderstood, starring Gene Hackman and Henry “E.T.” Elliot. Based on a novel by Florence Montgomery, the story was adapted for cinema first in 1967 as the film Incompreso, directed by Luigi Comencini. Set in Tunisia, the plot concerns an often-absent father who must take care of his two boys after his wife dies. The older boy is handling the difficult changes much better than the younger one.

Philippe Sarde composed one of his absolutes masterpieces (and the inspiration for future projects) for Misunderstood – a surprising blend of Jewish music, North African influences and American country music. Unfortunately, the film was not well received in its first screenings, and the producers decided to change not only the editing and some parts of the film (including the finale), but also to replace the entire score. For Jerry Schatzberg this was a disappointment, but he kept his desire to continue working with Sarde.

The perfect opportunity came only five years later with the beautiful film Reunion (aka L’ami retrouvé). Written by Harold Pinter from the novel by Fred Uhlman and starring Jason Robards, it tells the story of two young boys from very different backgrounds who become friends in 1933 Stuttgart. They don't realize how different they are, however, until much later. One is the son of a well-to-do Jewish doctor and the other the son of a German aristocrat, and after the election of Hitler things change as anti-Semitism gains favor. The core of the film deals with that era, but the film eventually segues to the present as the Jewish man returns to his boyhood home and seeks out his old friend … with some surprises.

The short but effective score was prepared by Sarde with great dedication and inspiration, It features a kind of ironic German march with echoes of jazz (the score was performed by the orchestra of Lester Bowie), and also a very emotional theme dedicated to the boys’ friendship.

Both scores now appear together as testimony to a brief but essential collaboration in the filmography of Philippe Sarde, with all the music recorded for Reunion, and the rejected score for Misunderstood transformed into an imaginary ballet with the title "Childhood Suite." The program has been brilliantly assembled and produced by Edouard Dubois, mastered by Jean-Pierre Chalbos and supervised by the composer. The package includes a 16-page full-color booklet with liner notes by Stéphane Lerouge and Christian Lauliac that include exclusive interviews with Jerry Schatzberg and Philippe Sarde.

LE SAUR DE L'ANGE
Music Composed and Conducted by François de Roubaix
Limited edition of 500 units

Quartet Records and Gruppo Sugar present the premiere release of the complete score by iconic French composer François de Roubaix (Le samourai, Dernier domicile connu, Le scoumoune) for the Polar classic Le Saut de l’ange (aka Cobra and Angel´s Leap) (1971). Directed by Yves Boisset, the film starred Jean Yanne, Senta Berger and Sterling Hayden. The plot is about an electoral battle raging in Marseilles. The Corsican Clan, under the rule of the Orsini family, is being challenged by the next generation, younger gangsters who support the candidacy of Forestier, an estate promoter. To ensure his election and to get his hands on the city, Forestier stops at nothing and has the Orsini brothers liquidated one by one. During this clearing operation, a little girl is accidentally shot. Her father, Louis Orsini, a former mercenary, decides to take revenge ...

François de Roubaix, a unique voice in French cinema, provides a haunting, melodic, delicate yet always unusual score dominated by the piano, synthesizer, sitar, accordion and strings – an eclectic combination recorded on his customary 8-track tape recorder at his Paris home studio.

Only two cues from Le Saut de l’ange were released on a single at the time of the film’s release. Now, thanks to the discovery of the first-generation master tapes courtesy of Gruppo Sugar, we can offer this masterwork in its entirety. As a bonus, also courtesy of Gruppo Sugar, we have included the only two surviving tracks from the electrifying and cool score composed by de Roubaix for the TV series Les Anges. The package includes a 12-page full-color booklet with liner notes by Stéphane Lerouge.
