I am thrilled to announce that the BYU / Screen Archives/ CR Studios presentation of Max Steiner's FIGHTER SQUADRON is Now Available!

FIGHTER SQUADRON is what some film music fans refer to as a “barn burner”. Composer Max Steiner goes all out with jaunty marches, spirited comedy motifs, and rousing action sequences for this 1948 tribute to the Army Air Corps during the Second World War. Director Raoul Walsh took the brakes off this free-flying re-working of THE DAWN PATROL with the accent on domineering officers, girl-chasing non-coms and thrilling enemy encounters,. While Steiner revives his famous DIVE BOMBER march, the presentation here is far more aggressive and it is presented in a superb-sounding recording. Brilliant fidelity is matched by a sweeping symphonic presentation that will leave you breathless by score’s end. Recorded at Warner Bros. with orchestrations by Murray Cutter and conducted by Max Steiner.

In addition to the soundtrack itself, the album features a 24 page full-color booklet with essays by James V. D’Arc and Ray Faiola, as well as a generous amount of original photographs and publicity material. Disc mastering by Ray Faiola, Chelsea Rialto Studios. Package design by Jim Titus.

A Brigham Young University Film Music Archive Production. All proceeds from this limited edition compact disc go towards the acquisition, preservation of film music elements and future public releases.

The score sounds great--a definite buy.

"In the dark days of 1943 and 1944, the American Air Forces, stationed in England, wrote a bright page of American history in the skies over Europe. To the men of Fighter Command, this picture is dedicated."

For FIGHTER SQUADRON, two weeks of location filming were done at Oscoda Air Base in Lake Huron, Michigan. Aircraft design evolved so rapidly during the war that the Air Force had to scour the Air National Guard for enough P-47 Thunderbolts to meet the needs of the filmmakers. To add realism to the film, Warner Bros. used previously unreleased Air Force color footage depicting aerial combat over Europe. FIGHTER SQUADRON's only video release has come through the Warner Archive's made-on-demand DVD program, in 2010.

Really Wonderful! Of this I had only a slight selection of 14 minutes, on the old Citadel album of Tony Thomas TTMS17, strangely not even reported by Soundtrack Collector.
This full extended score of 48 mins is now is a delight, and it is filling another gap in the Steiner output.
Thank, Fajola. And an additional thank for continuing the BYU series, very important for all of us.

The Thomas LPs were usually excerpts from the Steiner library tapes rather than complete transfers. The Steiner library tape is listed as 46 minutes (presumably the source for the BYU release): http://web.archive.org/web/20020925131817/maxsteinerhomepage.tripod.com/library.htm

Original source vis a vis the acetate discs, yes. Happily, Steiner's acetates were newly transferred. Fortunatley, we have never had to use a Steiner Library tape transfer (they were done in the 70's) for a release (with the exception of one cue in SINCE YOU WENT AWAY wherein the original disc had since been shattered).

This is indeed a very welcome release. Many thanks.

I wonder if Max Steiner ever imagined the fact that most of his musical legacy would be wiped if it weren't for the preservation of his transcription disks frown

Ordered!

This is a fine Max Steiner WWII score that fans will enjoy. I guess I can
now retire my old Max Steiner Society cassette tape of the acetates.

Thanks so much, Ray!

I think Ray has stated that WB has many Max Steiner scores from the 50s and 60s.

Sure wish WB was easier to work with. I hope the situation will improve.

Wonderful to be getting FIGHTER SQUADRON!

Ray, you have made my year. This is one I've been waiting for since you first announced it a few years (!) ago. I've ordered one for myself and one for my ex-airline pilot brother who also loved this Steiner score.

It's a double treat as some of the motifs in this one (besides the DIVE BOMBER march) are call backs to things like DESPERATE JOURNEY (the German stuff) and SERGEANT YORK (the Yankee Doodle quotes for D-Day.) It's really a shame that DESPERATE JOURNEY is evidently lost to ages as an isolated listening experience as that is another Steiner "Barn-Burner."

Meanwhile, I'm truly grateful that you gifted us with this Steiner treat. Thanks again, Ray. I look forward to many happy hours listening to this one.

Ray, you mentioned Steiner revives his famous march from DIVE BOMBER (1941) but didn't Max first write this for SUBMARINE D-1 (1937) ? (It was used in a few other WB films as well.)

Thanks for continuing the BYU Max Steiner series! smile
