I'm having an amazingly trivial disagreement with a good friend.
Everywhere you look on the internet, you are told that Saturday Night Live first aired in the fall of 1975.
However…I recall that it began the year before that, in 1974.

According to the IMDb, the 15th Anniversary TV special aired on September 24, 1989, which would mean that the show began in 1974.

Where could the "correct" information be found, outside the internet?

One way to find hard info off-Net would be to buy the relevant back-issues of TV Guide on eBay. Their program listings and network ad pages would be definitive if you can get them.

Also, do public libraries still maintain newspaper collections on microfilm, or the digitized scans of microfilm? They would also contain TV listings.

Thanks for that idea, Zap!
Hmmm…now I'm wondering if the public library would have reference materials that would cover this question...

You must have replied while I was editing my message to add the public library idea.

You can also try looking in the library for one of the many histories written about the show, if you need empirical evidence.

However, you can be sure that today is the anniversary. October 11th 1975.

I was there watching, and my DVD's of the complete seasons sets confirm episode #1 was broadcast Saturday October 11th, 1975.

There was another show on ABC called Saturday Night Live on at the same time. That's why SNL was actually called "NBC's Saturday Night" in it's earliest days. But it premiered in September of 1975, so that can't be what you're remembering.

It was a prime time variety show hosted by Howard Cosell of all people. Bill Murray was sketch player on the show a year before he appeared on Saturday Night Live.

What "Midnight Mike" said.

You can Google stuff like this. Wikipedia is a great source.

You can also go to the IMDb which also covers TV shows.

The authoritative Complete Directory to Network Prime Time and Cable TV Shows (sixth edition) lists October 11, 1975 as date of first telecast.

This is an actual paper book published in 1995 that I am holding in my hand.

A.B.C.'s show was actually titled "Saturday Night Live With Howard Cosell" which was taped at the Ed Sullivan Theatre, an ill conceived attempt to bring back "The Hollywood Palace" but lasted only four months. The first show of "Saturday Night Live" was indeed broadcast 10/11/'75, though at first referred to as "N.B.C.'s Saturday Night Live" and had George Carlin as its first host (there's an ad in T.V. Guide that shows its premiere). Ironically, Cosell DID appear on "Saturday Night Live" in its final show of the '84-85 season. They probably got that 15th anniversary of that show mixed up with the fact that "Saturday Night Live" was beginning its 15th season.

My first-ever glimpse of SNL was the STAR TREK skit, with John Belushi as Kirk and Dan Aykroyd as McCoy. I walked in mid-sketch and was totally confused and desperate to know what the hell this was. STAR TREK was my life at that point.

I didn't realize it could be a one-time comedy bit, because variety shows like Carol Burnett would not be on at this late hour. It shook me to my core.

The book Total Television: A Comprehensive Guide to Programming from 1948 to the Present gives the date of the first episode of Saturday Night Live as 11 October 1975. [Alex McNeil, Third Edition, (c)1991]

Here's a review of that first show, as printed in the Hollywood Reporter.

More importantly: when will it finally end?
Favourite SNL reference comes from "Married with children": "So football is out, baseball is out but Saturday Night Live is still on. That's three strikes so now we're out".

Not anytime soon, if NBC gives any credence to the ratings:

Saturday Night Live
Posted October 2 2016 — 3:11 PM EDT

Saturday Night Live returned for its 42nd season as a ratings smash, notching the long-running variety show’s biggest premiere numbers in 8 years.

The politically-leaning episode debuted 29 percent higher than 2015’s opener, according to live plus same day figures from 56 Nielsen metered markets. The telecast featured guest host Margot Robbie and musical guest The Weeknd. It also saw former SNL cast member Darrell Hammond return to Studio 8H as Bill Clinton, in addition to Larry David once again hitting 30 Rock as Senator Bernie Sanders.

SNL’s ratings surge, including a 5.8 household rating and a 15 share in metered markets (up from 2015’s 4.5/11 season-opening telecast), was the series’ highest-rated launch since its Sept. 13, 2008 premiere, when Tina Fey debuted her infamous Sarah Palin impersonation during an episode hosted by Michael Phelps. Phelps’ episode registered a 7.5 rating in metered markets.
