I'm using Windows 10. At first it automatically played a cd or dvd when I inserted it into the pc.
However lately, it will play a cd only if I manually bring up Windows Media Player and click on the cd.
With a dvd, sometimes it will play a dvd, but usually it says the dvd is "empty" and won't play it.

So any suggestions on why my Windows Media Player is so erratic---or any suggestions for a better media player I can download for free?

I recommend VLC. It's free, very stable and very good.

VLC is the tops for playing downloaded videos. (and it's free) Not sure how well it plays imported CD's however.

On my Windows 10 PC, I actually use iTunes as media player.

It is by no means perfect, but no other media player suits my needs as well, and I find it far more capable than the Windows 10 Media Player. It's also free (to use as a media player).
