I know it's a balance but I would love some new recordings of more obscure and unjustly forgotten stuff than just rehash.

Hi, Dave. I indeed completely forgot that the Abbey Road sessions didn't feature an English orchestra. I actually don't have this item yet and hope to find it in Paris very soon.

So Chris, you're basically telling us this CD was recorded live?! Decca then lied to us when they promoted it as containing studio recordings of the live versions. Maybe it was planned to do it in Prague and Morricone eventually renounced to it? Can you hear the applause and the overall noise of the concert halls on it?

Smaug, there's a superb box I can recommend to you:

http://www.chimai.com/index.cfm?module=MUS&mode=ALB&id=4149

Of course there are many classics on it but also rare stuff such as CITY OF JOY (a terrific suite), IL PAPA BUONO, KAROL, etc.

It's very strange really, there's no audience noise so I'm thinking that the music was recorded during rehearsals at the various venues. That would explain why it was recorded in so many different cities (seven in all) the sound quality of the concert pieces is excellent. My one gripe would be that the electric guitar in A Man And A Harmonica is dialled down very low, but I suppose that's Morricone's preference.

Here is another Morricone compilation, this time featuring songs which has just recently been released. Does anyone has this yet, any comments?

Morricone always dials down the electric guitar live in the most important tracks, in particular GBU title and Man with the harmonica. Its blended in so feebly that you can barely hear it and whole power of the theme is muted for this reason. Shame but a personal disappointment of mine when ive seen him live. My favourite versions of both of these tracks are Alessandroni's live version in Castelfranco. His GBU was superb and Man with Harmonica was great, but sadly the latter only in rehearsal, on the concert night the track started and the guitarist mislaid his music sheet! So no guitar at all!!

Laurent,

Thanks for posting that link, I'd no idea that this set existed, somehow it managed to sneak under my radar, however, thanks to you, I've now managed to order a copy which should be arriving in my hot little hands sometime on Friday.

I must say that on reading the tracklist it looks a fabulous collection. I was wondering are the tracks on the cd's concert versions are are they from the Original Soundtrack albums?

Or is it a combination of the two? smile

Chris, It's mostly live concert versions (and I think the applause annoyingly interrupts City of Joy, which is rare to find live), with some studio material carried over from the Io Morricone 4 CD set. No original score tracks I think. The DVD is the Vienna concert.

"The DVD is the Vienna concert."

- huh... no idea about this one. Did you mean Munich 2004, perhaps?

(I see this was released in 2010, and before that he only gave one concert in Vienna, on 12 december 2007)

Thomas, got this CD today and just played it. It's wonderful throughout. I of course knew all songs featured on it and bought it essentially for Patty Pravo's Un treno in più, the song based on SPAZIO 1999's unique theme. But it's also really worth acquiring for its 20-page booklet featuring in-depth liner notes by Ian Johnston and a track-by-track presentation by Mick Patrick. It has also a lot of pictures in display let alone a welcome mention to Didier Thunus' www.chimai.com website. Highly recommended, especially if you're not familiar with this aspect of Morricone's production.

Thanks for the heads up Laurent, the booklet is very nice...

Hi there!

I wanted some help on Morricone's compilations so I thought writing in this topic was the best thing to do:

Of Morricone compilations, I own "60 years of music compilation", as well as Yo-Yo Ma release, the Dulce Pontes one and the strange "Guardians of the Clouds" by Carel Kraayenhof.

Today I came across Morricone conducts Morricone in Seville cd and also a Sony album called "Ennio Morricone his greatest hits" in yellow fashion.

I bought the Seville one as it's becoming rare and wanted to know if the Sony one is worth keeping. It looks like a concert done in Rome in 1998. It is this one: https://www.amazon.com/Ennio-Morricone-conducts-Greatest-Hits/dp/B01KYUIPGQ

Thanks!

Hi,the Sony album looks to be a re-issue of Cinema Concerto: Ennio Morricone at Santa Cecilia (Sony SK61672) which, whilst described as a concert does not have any audience (noise). Of all the Maestro's concert recordings I own, this is easily the worst being somewhat thin in sound, basically un-involving. Perhaps this later release has better mastering/whatever to give it some life.

Also, in place of the wonderful Edda Dell'Orso we have Gemma Bertagnolli ... good she may be but not that good in these recordings. In other concert recordings the soprano Susanna Rigacci performs much, much better.

I agree that the Carel Kraayenhof album is strange ... I struggle to get through it in one sitting.

Mitch

This is the one I had on cassette. The Rhino/RCA Anthology pretty much completely replaced it.

My favourite compilation is 2CD Edda dell'Orso Performs Ennio Morricone
