And let's not forget that Carl Davis score, maybe his TV score masterpiece.

They'll never make a better WWII docu, because no matter what great footage they uncover, they can't interview again the key players who are now gone.

Wow. After the Great War series, this was even better. Considered by many working in TV as the best series/documentary ever made. This was impressive when it came out, and as william says, even more poignant now when you realise the brave people you are watching articulate their difficult experiences have virtually all gone. The last of a generation.

I got a free box set of dvds with a newspaper a few years ago and i watch the lot periodically. Olivier's delivery takes the the thing to a whole new level. Anyone who ever wonders why the world considered him so good, need not look any further for evidence. Just his voice alone, the pacing, the phrasing, the delivery, the tone - it should be a syllabus at acting school so young actors can see what can be done with voice alone.

A must have for me. Quite rightly considered one of the greatest documentaries ever made.

The original Blu-ray set had the image cropped to facilitate filling the widescreen TV. Mistake. Looks like this new transfer will return to the original aspect ratio...

...but will it be available in America, too?

Goddaman I hate, hate hate this practice!!!
I have pretty much given up watching historical documentaries because of this practice (and, transferring video images to film) which is totally unneccessary
Our heritage is being mutilated!!!!!!!!!!!!

If they crop it they should also provide the original format.

The constant use of gung-ho american drawlin' deep throated voices and ghastly 'dramatic' music to frame the action of war histories proliferating just about everywhere these days is a far cry from the Dowding-like Larry Olivier dry delivery, sans bombast.

The use of silence and pause in TWAW was masterly. In fact, the series is the closest thing to reading a book in flow and fluency, but in pure pictorial/speaker form, I can think of. That may have been the trick in making the series such an intensely personal experience.

The release info above specifically says it's original full screen (which means 4:3), so there's no reason to worry or spread false rumors. The 2010 blu-ray was cropped to widescreen, everyone complained, and it's been corrected. However, the UK release will probably be Region 2 locked, and the Dvd version will be PAL.
