I don't hear anything when I use Apple earbuds because they always fall out of my ear Based on what I've seen of the new EarPods, Im guessing I'll get the same results.
This 'test' is utterly meaningless as you're using two completely different sources with different built-in amps.
Mostly correct. As soon as I get the wife's iPhone 5s up to iOS 10 (we have the same phones) I'll do a side by side with every variable equal but the EarPods themselves.
I do think it's interesting that the iPhone had better bass.
Also, all eqalization was turned off of course.
Oh and I've read that earbuds have a Break In Period of 10s or 100s of hours of use before they give their true sound.
...has a richer bass and I'm hearing cellos during End of Dream I'd never heard before.
Not having played this score (V/S 1990 OST) for over 18 mths I've just listened to that track ...
... I'm not sure about cellos but I'm sure I heard the kitchen sink
I'm convinced there are several double basses and probably cellos but I couldn't distinguish that particular instrument (I'm more used to cello sonatas and piano trios these days). And the problem with listening to that track - played loud - is it's difficult to listen to anything else for a while afterwards.
I'm afraid you must nominate a time window within the 5'47" play time so I can listen more carefully.
Final Verdict Apple's new EarPods with Lightning Connector for a direct digital signal and no DA conversion are like taking the blankets off the midrange speaker. End of a Dream from the second the track starts has much much much more clearly defined midrange.
After the theoretical break-in period of new headphone/earbuds I was forced to use my previous analog connection headphone jack Earpods (HJ Earpods). I couldn't find my Lightning Connector Earpods (LC Earpods).
The HJ Earpods sounded like listening to music underwater. I thought they were broken.
I can't emphasize enough how much of a difference I'm hearing. It's not psychosomatic. It's huge.
Went back to End of a Dream and it's just as clear as an Oxygenated Martian Sunrise.
Drawbacks are of course you can't charge and listen at the same time. But that and $30 to make all my music sound better seems like a good trade off.

The DA Converter is built-in to the Lightning connector/adapter.
