Well, Lukas isn't wrong. My wife, daughter and I found the movie great in its first two sequences, 20-30 minutes, right up until the two leads were introduced. But as a life-long science fiction fan in all media, I couldn't miss it. There is plenty to enjoy and plenty to, well, not as much. We decided that it was as if the movie had been made by Howard Moon and Vince Noir of the Mighty Boosh. I really enjoyed Desplat's score, found it diverse and a great support for the movie in the classic manner. And enjoyed the songs as well, especially the charming use of Space Oddity. The movie worked a lot better when the images and music carried the story.

I'm a fan of Desplat but the action music here sounds generic and similar to that in a hundred other movies. Some nice slower pieces though....

I saw this move last week and enjoyed it immensely, thoroughly entertaining. Perhaps I liked it so much since I grew up with the comic books and am totally familiar with the material. Perhaps it’s misunderstood by those who are not so familiar with Valerian’s universe, who knows. The story is not so much the volume ‘The Empire of a Thousand Planets’ (the story that resembled Star Wars, preceding it by a few years), but rather ‘Ambassador of the Shadows’. I had my doubts since I liked the books and heard about the bad reception the film got, but I think the film looked astonishing. You can enjoy the film separately from the books as another take on these stories. I also bought the soundtrack by Desplat and enjoyed that too. As others have said before it’s very much a fun score with great arrangements, not so much melody. You can even listen to it while reading the books as a soundtrack to them and indulge in the soundscapes. The short bonus CD with songs is not bad either and a nice addition for the cheap price you pay for the set. I would not have included Space Oddity, but it seems to work for most. I am not very familiar with other scores by Desplat - I only have ‘The Girl with the Pearl Earring’ (that I quite like) and ‘Birth’ (that I loathe, mainly because of the (ab)use of some irritating electronic distortion noise throughout the score, I never played it again). So bring on a sequel to this Valerian, so many stories to choose from.

This sucks. Eric Serra would have been PERFECT for a job like this, and it's a mystery to me why Besson has opted out of his regular partner for this one. It seems my Desplat/Giacchino curse continues. I actually have high expectations for this film, given Besson's brilliant return to form with LUCY, but a little less now that Serra has been sent out the airlock, in favour of Desplat. AGREED. Besson didn't use Serra for The Family in 2013 either, though.

It's a wonderful movie with terrific music. As far as space opera is concerned, I enjoyed the movie more than the current STAR WARS sequel trilogy. It was a movie with a sense of wonder and fun and playfulness and joy, obviously, Luc Besson was really in it and wanted to make this movie, a passion project.

Can't say that I dislike any cues on the Valerian Soundtrack, I even enjoy the songs.
