After the great new recordings of Metropolis and the monumental Die Nibelungen, Frank Strobel recorded another film score by the german composer Gottfried Huppertz (1887-1937): Zur Chronik von Grieshuus (Chronicles of the Grey House), a film directed by Arthur von Gerlach in 1925.

Another gem by a very interesting composer who, according to conductor Frank Strobel, is supposed to have had a strong influence on some Hollywood Golden Age musicians like Steiner, Korngold and Waxman.
I personally love both the Metropolis and Die Nibelungen recordings and found Strobel conducting outstanding.
Looking forward to this new double cd with great expectation.

Completely unfamiliar with the film (and therefore its music of course / actually I have not even heard of or read about that film before) but given how much I enjoy the two Huppertz/Strobel releases you have mentioned I'll probably blind-buy this one.

Yes, in the past years Frank Strobel has done a great work restoring and recording silent film scores.
If I'm not wrong, no one here has ever mentioned another interesting cd devoted to Pietro Mascagni and Nino Rota:

While I prefer the longer and more passionately conducted suite from Il Gattopardo recorded for Sony by Riccardo Muti (https://www.amazon.com/Nino-Rota-Music-Film/dp/B0000029ZF), I find the Mascagni score very compelling and interesting.
And I'm surprised not to find any comment about this recording here...

Thank you for the heads up! Anything by Huppertz is an instant buy for me. He was a genius and "Metropolis" is at the top of my all time favorites. I wonder if a blu-ray of the film might be in the works in a deal with Kino USA. There's already a standard DVD in Germany, no English subs for the inter-titles however.

Does the German D.V.D. contain a rerecorded version of Huppertz' score or another score?

I thought I mentioned it once, maybe not. it's a very nice score, yes. And it's a shame the Rota is kinda dull that's tacked on to it. But alas...

Very excited about another Huppertz, love both Metropolis and Die Nebelung.

Hi Ed, Kino has released a Blu-ray end of 2010 (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Metropolis-Blu-ray/8710/). It features the reconstructed, Strobel conducted Huppertz score (as do the UK & German BDs).

Does the German D.V.D. contain a rerecorded version of Huppertz' score or another score?

The German 3-Disc Special Edition DVD from 2011 contains the Huppertz score.

Thanks very much for the heads up on this release, Buss1974. Strobel's recordings of Huppertz's works have all been winners so now I'm looking forward to this new recording as well.

Yes. Frank Strobel is an authority on silent film music restoration and recording. In addition, he recorded the complete restored original version of Alexander Nevsky, another superlative recording:

His work on Huppertz is very impressive: it gave us the possibility to rediscover this great composer. Particularly in the score to Die Niberlungen, it's very fascinating to notice that the opulent orchestration and the use of the leitmotiv has many similarities with the composing style of Max Steiner, Erich Korngold and many Austro-German composers of the Golden Age of Hollywood. In my opinion, the way of developing the impressive themes and motives and their orchestral treatments remembers me some of the early scores of Steiner from the 1930s.
