I love this score. The more I listen to it the more it makes me appreciate how many Williams-isms Giacchino has built in to integrate the score into the classic tapestry of this series. The fact that Giacchino was under immense pressure with only the smallest amount of time to create this proves even more what a terrific composer he is. When Williams decides to stop scoring the STAR WARS movies I definitely want Giacchino to be his successor.

I'm catching more and more references to the Original Trilogy scores the more I see the movie & listen to the score. For instance, anyone catch a couple blatant quotes of Williams' theme from ANH, and I'm not sure what exactly you'd call it, but it's a quote of basically a D D D - D F F D F F (Eb F trill) D in "Krennic's Aspirations" (the Krennic Vader scene). Also the beginning of Star-Dust sounds eerily like a callback to The Hologram from ANH. You'd call it Darth Vader's theme. Williams did. It's what plays (for example) in Star Wars when Luke asks "How did my father die?" I was DELIGHTED that G used that theme. It was almost disconcerting to hear both of Vader's themes used together. (In a wonderful way.) Kevin Kiner has used the theme in Rebels but never for Vader himself. Yes, I didn't catch the Star Dust reference in the theater. But it jumped out at me when I listened to the score. It's one of my favorite queues because it starts out so Williams and then becomes one of the most Giacchino tracks on the album. While Giacchino's Williams voice is impressive, there are a few tracks that seemed rather Barry to me (Jedha Arrival has some very Barry synth that I love). Has it been noted that the "hero theme" used over the titles (and again in Rebellions are Built on Hope) is the notes to Luke's theme in a different order? Now that I've seen the whole film that burst of YAY! over the titles just about makes me cry. It's not going to go well.

Anyone know where Krennic's Aspirations fits into the total program?
You made me think I left it out of my list, but I didn't! Well, The FYC program omits a lot of cues that had Williams material in them; edits the Williams material out of others, but also has ~26 1/2 minutes unreleased music in 12 unique tracks! Here's how to assemble your playlists! 01 OST 01 He's Here For Us (3:20) 02 OST 02 A Long Ride Ahead (3:56) 03 OST 03 Wobani Imperial Labor Camp (0:54) 04 OST 04 Trust Goes Both Ways (2:45) 05 OST 05 When Has Become Now (1:59) 06 OST 06 Jedha Arrival (2:48) 07 FYC 05 Hearts Of Kyber (0:57) 08 OST 07 Jedha City Ambush (2:19) 09 FYC 07 Today of All Days (3:34) 10 OST 08 Star-Dust (3:47) 11 FYC 09 An Imperial Test Of Power (2:49) 12 FYC 10 Approach To Eadu (1:19) 13 FYC 11 No Trust Among Rebels (2:01) 14 FYC 12 Jyns's Path Is Clear (2:31) 15 OST 09 Confrontation on Eadu (8:05) 16 OST 10 Krennic's Aspirations (4:16) 17 OST 11 Rebellions Are Built on Hope (2:56) 18 OST 12 Rogue One (2:04) 19 OST 13 Cargo Shuttle SW-0608 (3:59) 20 FYC 18 Good Luck Little Sister (2:48) 21 FYC 19 Are We Blind? Some of my favorite cues are the FYC only cues (“Hearts of Khyber,” “Good Luck, Little Sister” etc). I saw the film again and didn't notice too much missing from the album and FYC combined… the most prominent piece that isn't included is the transition to Yavin IV, which wouldn't have been on the FYC because the Rebel fanfare is featured in it. I have found this “expanded” album very repeatable. The themes are really growing on me, and I think “Guardians of the Whills Suite” is worth the price of the record. The cut-off at the end of “Today of All Days” rankles me every time, though.

Not including John Williams' material makes this score a very incomplete one for me. It'd be like releasing the Jurassic World score sans JW's theme and the end credits, all of which are in the released score. So why couldn't Rogue One and Walt Disney Records do it? As I said, given the extreme time crunch involved with the creation of this score, it is very possible that they didn't know what the final configuration of the credits would have to be until it was too late for the album.
