The best video response and the best video of the three, IMO.
And just for shits and giggles, Christopher Coleman and I discuss the original video's strengths and weaknesses on the latest episode of The Soundcast Stereo.
For some wacky reason Marvel has chosen not to make their movies for film music aficionados and has decided to make money instead. Given they want to keep their jobs that's not a bad choice.
The people running the production side know how to make movies that work big for the general public without alienating the fans of the comics. Look at the DC movies and you'll see how easily that can go wrong. They are concerned with the music as it enhances the scenes as building blocks to the overall effect of a satisfying movie that brings people back to this movie and others in the brand.
That means they are not particularly attuned to the music as an artistic work or a musical experience, merely as a tool in their toolbox to achieve the larger goal. From a critical standpoint, perhaps as a result, the movies have had mixed results, but you can't deny that they achieve the goal of turning out satisfying movies that the vast majority enjoy shelling out their money to see.
This may not be a very creatively satisfying experience for composers or film music fans, but it does pay those composer's mortgages and result in movies that make their employers and audiences very happy.
Sorry, that's just the way it is. And I enjoy the movies and some of the scores. I don't mind their approach at all and have a great time with the movies.
