Is there some advantage? Why don't we see posts with labels saying that these 12 titles are the ones they have in development? Do you really need this explained? OK, sometimes deals fall apart, Approvals take forever to get on artwork, etc NO ONE what's to get emails saying "When is it coming out?" about a project for two years or more... It's just vastly better to just tell folks about something after it's signed, sealed and delivered. Ford A. Thaxton

It's to try and get everyone talking about the actual music on the current releases, instead of speculating about the future all the time. Like that ever happens. Few new announcement threads get beyond the tenth post without someone mentioning what they would have rather seen released or what they want released next. THIS MV

I think another reason is the amount of questions in regards to the release. They don't stop and if they aren't answered, at times, people can get quite upset or think the labels or me or others are ignoring them. Deals fall apart, approvals take forever and so much more. The labels want to spend more of their valuable time getting these finished then answering many questions about will this cue or that cue be on it.

I remember a LLL announcement for a 'Farscape' album that did not appear until more than a year later. Hell, look at the announcement for 'The 10 Commandments'- even with everything teed up for release, a packaging delay still stalled shipping. I appreciate hints as to what's in the pipeline, but it still won't make releases any easier for the labels or in our hands any faster.

While several people here have properly explained the downside to announcing titles well in advance, I would also add that I cannot see a single upside for a label. So why would they? Indeed. And, apart from the many reasons already mentioned here, just imagine a current release project, possibly difficult to negotiate, tricky to restore from deteriorated mastertapes, where everybody involved is giving it their best shot and plenty of hours of hard work because they are all excited about it, being greeted on these boards with something along the lines of: "Pass." Just not all that motivating.
